#DYK? Trilobites ruled the Earth longer than the dinosaurs! It took three major mass extinctions to end trilobites’ more than 250-milion year evolutionary lifespan. Join Museum Curator Melanie Hopkins to explore these arthropods through the Museum’s extensive collection of trilobite specimens.

If you ask someone today to name the builder of Hadrian's Wall, they would give you a funny look. But historical memory is odd, and right up to the 1800s we forgot who built it.

Until in 1840 John Hodgson, an obscure Northumbrian clergyman, published the LONGEST footnote in history... 1/22

I think about the consistently misunderstood case of the Luddites. They were extremely advanced machine users (go try to use a spinning Jenny!), but they recognized a technological regime that displaced expertise (and payment) from the artisan to the tool.

Some brilliant points here about illustration as a distinct art form, and its role in human storytelling. Love this!!

This is like Universal Basic Income: everyone knows bike lanes and parking restrictions make cities more liveable for everyone, drivers included. But 99% of politicians are too short-term and too damn chicken-shit to actually do it.

Increasingly believe that the only ways to be able to work full-time as an artist are either benefitting from the safety of familial wealth, being part of a dual-income household, or acquiring the patronage of a Florentine banking and political dynasty that ascended to power in the 15th century

Urghh... it's as bad as I hoped it wasn't - these really are 'the first', 'the earliest', 'the only'.

In terms of gold cash price they're not worth a huge amount, maybe £60k, if that - but in historical value, they're utterly priceless.

So awful.😔

I like that the American convention of "old/rural = conservative" just doesn't hold up in large parts of Eastern Canada. You can hike deep into the forests of the Gaspé peninsula and meet septuagenarians with political views that would melt the tires clean off a Republican's car.
