I know it’s easier said than done to not stress too much right now, but please keep in mind all the setbacks we’re going to face in terms of healthcare, and how damaging for your health a dysregulated nervous system can be. Please do everything you can to prioritize your wellbeing, health, & peace!

Yes, it’s very hard to organize and educate when we’re being censored on social media, but no, IT IS NOT OK to misuse the captions feature to circumvent that. It makes your content explicitly inaccessible to people that rely on accurate captions -

Hey diva 💕
Please remember to at least take a break from doomscrolling today to take care of yourself. Hydrate, eat, take your meds. It’s natural to feel radicalized more than ever right now, but you can’t pour from an empty cup, and you certainly can’t start a revolution without fueling your body.

I’ve seen a lot of discourse on whether Nessarose will gain the ability to walk in #Wicked: Part 2, and whether or not that would be problematic. One thing I’ve seen multiple times is people comparing Nessa being granted the ability to walk with Elphaba’s potential “de-greenifying” by the wizard.

PLEASE run for your library board. A lot of bad actors are on library boards because they seek to control and diminish the library, not support it. Some boards refuse to hire qualified librarians and seek to deprofessionalize the field. It won’t change unless you join!
I’m a public librarian in a degenerating democracy, and I am pleading: Care about your library. Use it. See what programs and events it offers. And pay attention to its governing body. See who the trustees are. Consider running yourself. Libraries will need all the community support they can get. 📚

Good thread on what alt-text is and why it’s so important #Disability #DisabilityRights #Accessibility
A brief thread on alt-text.

Alt text is descriptive text that conveys the meaning of an image. It's designed to make visual content accessible to people with vision disabilities. When a person uses assistive technology such as a screen reader, the screen reader will read the onscreen text aloud 1/7

I will literally never get over how many of the loudest "disability justice" voices on this site don't wear masks. You only care about helping disabled people when it doesn't inconvenience you.

As a person who can be forgetful but who also wants to uphold disability justice whenever I can, I wanted to share how you can change your settings so that Bluesky won’t allow you to post until all your images have alt text. Alt text doesn’t have to be a big ordeal!

The discourse over twitter & leaving vs staying is getting truly goofy in some directions.

Twitter is not a *place* ffs. Twitter without the people is nothing. We have 100% of the power over whether twitter has value or not.

When we leave, we're not ceding ground? We're taking the ground with us.

Glad to see more people from the old place posting here, it'd be great if you took few seconds to go into your profile and selected:

Settings > Accessibility > Alt text
Require alt text before posting ✔️

Cheers!

PSA for newbies:

Please include ALT text on your images.

This is an inclusive space for blind and visually impaired people.

Don't arrive late to the party and ignore a bunch of people.

Also, please share this skeet, rather than liking it, to ensure the message gets delivered.

Thanks!

I should have added: If you need help remembering to write alt text, Bluesky has a reminder function in Settings.

You do need to turn it on to use it, but many folks say it helps.

Incidentally, all of what I've explained above is why

a. AI alt text will not save us.
b. Copy/pasting the same alt text for an image every time you use it with no edits is rarely appropriate.
c. Storing a single alt text option in an image's metadata is unhelpful.
