If you're seeing encouragement/demands to do alt text and you're overwhelmed or confused about how to do it and you're worried you're going to do it wrong...

this thread is for you.

First: prompt questions to get you started.
Alt text prompt Qs:

What would someone who can't see the image need to know about it in order to take part in the conversation? What is it about this image that made you choose it? What are the important details someone who could see the image would take away from it?

(Not for images of text.)

Because the alt attribute doesn't work on videos, Bluesky will pass the text you input to a figcaption element being used in a way contrary to both HTML standards and accessibility best practices.

On the other hand, if you upload your own animated GIF, Bluesky will convert it to a video file. I don't know why (possibly something about compression techniques?), but it will.

In that situation, Bluesky will still tell you that you can add "alt text", but it's not actually going to be alt text.

Many people don't know that video files cannot support the alt attribute and cannot have alt text. There are other tools for making videos accessible.

The way Bluesky's dev team has done things falsely indicates otherwise and confuses a lot of people, but if you look at the code, it's obvious.
Someone once got extremely angry at being told that alt text for videos isn't a thing and was like "it seems like the argument is just that traditionally it hasn't been" and I was like "no, actual alt attribute will not work except on a few specific tags and video isn't one of them."

Being a commercial developer is several huge leaps away from being "a builder".

If you're a large account people follow for Disability-related information and you find it difficult to implement appropriate digital accessibility tools on your content, it is your responsibility to reach out and ask for assistance getting that done.

Again, you're an example of how to do this.

This means using alt text correctly (not popularly—correctly) and including video descriptions at minimum and ideally transcripts.

The assertion that people can't/shouldn't ask for others around them to help make the world to be a better place unless making the world a better place is a behavior forcibly imposed on them is a really weird position to take.

It's okay to be prosocial and constructive and not always adversarial.

Today I finally emailed the trainer our vet recommended for Bella. So that's good.

I explained the situation.

I was thinking about people from the dominant groups being like "cis is a slur" and whatever and I think in the end they just don't like that people in a group they think of as lesser—and don't belong to—have a term for them that they don't have control over.

I am prepared to go to bed now but these dogs are somehow making themselves extra heavy on my lap.

Rudy Yakym "make sure our veterans get what they deserve. Thank them."

With a story about an amputee vet right before that.

Because what vets need is "thanks" and not, you know, healthcare and housing and shit.

Translators work hard to make sure that the translated words, sentences, paragraphs, chapters, etc, not only convey the author's meaning, but also the author's *style.*

Translators are alchemists. They are artists, and poets, and researchers, and editors. They are magicians and wizards.

AND ANOTHER THING, WHILE I'M AT IT:

ENOUGH WITH THESE BULLSHIT CLAIMS THAT AI CAN REPLACE HUMAN TRANSLATORS!!!

Translation is *not* the science of finding the perfect definition of a word from a foreign language and putting that definition into the text.

Translators translate, of course. But!

I really, really hope everyone posting about having a cold or the flu feels better soon, but I really, really, REALLY hope you're all testing for Covid. Even if it wouldn't change how you treat yourself, it could make a difference in how dangerous you are to others. Please test & isolate if needed!

Obviously the appropriate thing to do here—if you are going to ban locals from renting hotel rooms, which... no—is not to leave exceptions up to individual managers but to have a clear and public exceptions policy for emergencies so everyone is on the same page and has a document to point to.
Based on the article, it sounds like if you approach the hotel itself directly and explain that you need a room because of an emergency, they might waive their no-locals policy.

Which is not the best solution and I'm very familiar with "ask if you need an exception" policies being trash. But.

If you're a large Disability-related account, I am available to provide resources for how to do these things and help you figure out a long-term strategy for integrating digital accessibility into your content creation workflow if needed.

I won't do it for you, but I can help you think it through.
