If you're seeing encouragement/demands to do alt text and you're overwhelmed or confused about how to do it and you're worried you're going to do it wrong...

this thread is for you.

First: prompt questions to get you started.
Alt text prompt Qs:

What would someone who can't see the image need to know about it in order to take part in the conversation? What is it about this image that made you choose it? What are the important details someone who could see the image would take away from it?

(Not for images of text.)
Me: okay down to a week to get my apartment ready for the annual housing authority inspection for my HCV. Gotta really start doing the things.

Also me: slept in very late, has not yet left the bed, genuinely worn out from all the stuff I did last week.

Everything I've ever heard about Alberta does not make me think well of it.

When people save my posts and I can't see who they are... it bugs me.

Let me see who wants to keep my words.

But also privacy is good, so.

Thinking about this concept structure for a lot of reasons, right now
“queer not as being about who you’re having sex with (that can be a dimension of it); but queer as being about the self that is at odds with everything around it and has to invent and create and find a place to speak and to thrive and to live.” -bell hooks

Do people outside of the group whose conversations these are to have really hate not knowing the exactly correct language to use and not knowing if what one racialized person tells them is correct is going to change and not be correct or actually bother a different racialized person?

Obviously.
Are these terms racialized people try to figure out to use for ourselves complicated? Yes, for fuck's sake, we're not goddamn monoliths.

These are negotiations we have in community with other racialized people to figure out how to use language to accurately represent our experiences.
James Carville doesn't get to talk about the terms racialized people try to figure out to use for ourselves and talk about our experiences. Fucking period.

White people stfu and foh on that topic forever.

I forgot how much I appreciated this Netflix true crime show, Missing: Dead or Alive?

Even though that title is sensationalist af—and it's very literally a cop show, which I avoid these days—it's sensitive and compassionate (especially for a true crime show that includes cops) and shows real care.

When they talk about hyper-individualism it seems very much like reactionary knee-jerking against even any discussion of expanding accessibility.
The way folks have increasingly picked up arguing that sameness and conformity is the only way to be prosocial is ridiculous to me as a Disabled person.

It's like they're looking at two different problems—the first, folks actually not caring about other people and the second, folks being shoved out of society for inability to conform to arbitrary standards (often created specifically to streamline profit for others)—but calling them the same.

“Capitalism forces you to wake up at 7am against your body’s natural rhythms” no that’s Taylorism and if you don’t like living in a society that coordinates effort to ensure a better outcome for all then I don’t think you’ll love the alternatives

Because I don't want to keep zombifying that thread, replying in a new thread.
In my experience (which is mostly seeing people post GIFs from the Tenor library here on Bluesky), it's not even a fairly accurate description. It usually knows if there's a man or a woman, and it can quote any text in a still image (or the first frame of an animation), but that's about it.

How could it possibly harm young people to be constantly bombarded with images and text of friends, family and acquaintances curating what they document of their lives to appear as though their entire existences conform to impossible standards which those young people cannot achieve.
Meta halted internal research that purportedly showed (young) people who stopped using Facebook became less depressed and anxious, according to an unredacted legal filing released on Friday. www.cnbc.com/2025/11/23/m...

It's like using AI for alt text. Yeah, it will generate something and that something will likely be a fairly accurate description of the image, but that's not what alt text is supposed to be.

Alt text is contextual and that requires discernment that LLMs just cannot do.

I'd just use a lorem ipsum generator if I wanted plausible-looking nonsense.
There are a lot of critiques of LLMs that I agree with but "they suck and aren't useful" doesn't really hold water.

I understand people not using them because of social, economic, and environmental concerns. And I also understand people using them because they can be very useful.

Thoughts?

This is why I am so good at recommending things to watch. Being alone in my own head with a high-maintenance brain that has a self-destructive streak is not conducive to long-term survival.
I went to this Buddhist meditation thing today and my takeaway is that spending an hour in my own head is exponentially worse than just bottling up my toxic bullshit until I explode

I don't know who I was just listening to on Lions Radio but he just said it's a "morgue in Jerry Jones' Ego Stadium".

And I didn't know you could say things like that on official NFL team radio.

Oh I'm just now looking at the Eagles-Cowboys score and that looks a lot like the first quarter of the Notre Dame game yesterday and that does not suggest good things for Dallas.

So I always had short hair for most of my life so there were a lot of things I never learned like that my hair type is prone to split ends and they become more common the longer my hair gets and the longer I go between trims.

The last time I got my hair cut was 2016.

So.

Yeah.

This Lions game is painful. I switched to the radio broadcast again which was a good choice but this is. Bad.

Oh also I have a tab open about the pre-soccer and also pre-rugby game called "camping" which frankly sounds like tackle football but also more or less foot-the-ball from Discworld.

Oh I came here to say I'm watching an episode of Secrets of the Dead about the 5th USCC from the Civil War. Twenty Black enlisted men massacred by civilians in Kentucky.

I've never heard about this before.

I'm theoretically fine with this if airlines fill their end of the bargain and turn flying commercial back into the luxury special event folks were dressing up for.

Where luggage isn't extra and everyone has plenty of space.
This is what Duffy wants air travel to be:
