If I was running a local newsroom, I’d be finding local families living this same exact nightmare. This ‘show & tell’ of what it’s like to try (&fail) to find someone locked up by DHS is crucial to understanding the devastating, real-life impacts of these Trump immigration policies.
Everyone should take a couple of minutes and watch this, because it's a perfect illustration of how ICE disappears people by making it almost impossible to communicate with family, friends, and lawyers.

Homeland Security is trying to save Chicago from the scourge of tamale vendors and Uber drivers. These folks are not the "worst of the worst." Far from it. They help make our city work. If Trump's thugs wanted to rid Chicago of the worst of the worst, they'd put Greg Bovino on a plane out of town.

Border Patrol is arresting and terrorizing positive, productive members of our community – people we want here in Evanston.
The violence in our community is being committed by Homeland Security.

this right here is what's actually happening & really ought to be a part of every pundit panel and news story. The GOP made it's choice, it chose to fund the secret police that is back in my city of Chicago again today terrorizing hard working people.
AOC: I want to remind you where the real crime is. It's in the oligarchs taking $170 billion of our money from health care and food assistance and public programs and taking that and funneling it into a secret police program.

The key question in American politics now is whether public disapproval of Trump will grow fast enough to save our democracy before Trump builds such a crushing dictatorship that public opinion no longer matters.

More federal tear gas in the Chicago area. Homeland Security isn’t keeping us safe. It’s terrorizing us on the orders of a criminal president.
After this, federal agents tear gassed the public on their way out of Elgin, per our photographer who was present. The Feds tear gassed eight Chicago neighborhoods this fall and now a suburb.
In Elgin, ICE agents have been in a standoff with the community as they’re trying to arrest a man. Here’s an altercation between the feds and residents ending with arrest and pepper spray. Video from Sophia Peterson

Democratic politicians need to stop accepting Trump’s white nationalist premise that immigration is bad and proudly and loudly make a positive case for why America’s identity and history as a nation of immigrants is so important.

“Short bursts indicate an ICE sighting. Long whistles indicate agents making arrests. If you hear the whistle and you’re undocumented, said [Whitney Hu, a community activist and organizer with South Brooklyn Mutual Aid], ‘you hide. And if you’re somebody who’s not, you go to the street.’”
As ICE Street Raids Ramp Up, New Yorkers Stock Up On Whistles
Taking a cue from Chicago, community groups have distributed thousands of whistles in recent weeks — a grassroots system people in other cities have adopted to help neighbors sound the alarm.

There's a lot we have not visualized in a useful way.

One of the big ones is the SHIFT in govt employment from "people who cure cancer" and "people who make sure your Social Security comes on time" and "people who care for veterans" to "people who kidnap your neighbors."

there's lots of talk about federal agents leaving chicago. details are still murky, but reports suggest greg bovino and other higher ups are skipping town.

regardless of what happens, border patrol was only the most visible, most brutal occupying force. the abductions won't stop once bovino leaves.

Please note this is also in addition to ongoing kidnappings across the suburbs, with sightings reported in more of them than we can even list at the moment. This is daily life now, and there's no one central place reporting them all.
ICE/CBP is active in Lincoln Park right now, has been spotted near Damen/Clybourn at Costco + Jewel (this is in addition to a morning abduction reported at Costco earlier).

People believe grocery delivery drivers are being targeted and are asking folks to alert other vulnerable workers as well.

This thread is about Evanston, but this has also been going on without reprieve in Elgin, Aurora, and other Chicago suburbs—a metro area of nearly 10 million people.
Some context to the viral videos:

Around 9am Friday, ICE/CBP *encircled* several square miles of a safe suburb and *stormed* it using multiple units.

They were in cars, on foot in alleys & gangways, and in helicopters. They demanded papers, threatened residents, pointed guns, kidnapped people.

Yes, “randomized terror” is exactly how it feels.
On the occasion of Halloween, @newrepublic.com asked me to write about what’s going on in Chicago and I wanted you all to know what randomized terror feels like. And also that as the federal government fails our kids, everyday Chicagoans are showing the courage of trying to protect them.
ICE Is Terrorizing Chicago for Halloween—and Parents Are Fighting Back
Fear and a whiff of tear gas hang over festivities this year. In response, even people who aren’t usually politically engaged are mobilizing.

This ICE removal trip operated by Omni Air International just landed in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Migrant passengers onboard have now been shackled at their wrists, ankles and waists for 40 hours.

This is the second ICE removal to Cambodia in six weeks. The other one was also operated by Omni.
This ICE removal operated by Omni Air International is now making its second stop, in Sri Lanka. So far, migrants onboard have spent 34 hours in handcuffs, leg irons and a waist chain. There may be more stops.

Omni and its parent company were purchased in April by private equity firm Stonepeak.

All of this …
our neighborhoods are filled with masked agents, who violently abduct dozens of people every single day from out of ubers and in front of elementary schools and from their goddamn houses for the sole reason that they’re brown.

Yes, senate republicans, Mueller, McConnell, Roberts — they were all complicit.

But Biden and Garland were supposed to be the good guys. To save the soul of America. To uphold justice no matter what.

And this is what they did with their 4 years.

This is their legacy.
