Iran has killed all connections to the outside. But in the early morning the regular internet works briefly. In that time, @hackimi.bsky.social sent me a letter about what it's like being a developer without the internet as the government tries to squash everyone:

A Game Developer Without Internet
Iran has been without internet for 9 days. Arash sent a letter as a developer without the internet, in the few moments when the great firewall faltered.

In the same way that some sports franchises only have one historical player known as "the captain," Hiroshi Tanahashi defines the word "Ace" for New Japan Pro Wrestling. defector.com/hiroshi-tana...
Hiroshi Tanahashi Leaves An Unfillable Void In Japanese Wrestling | Defector
I had over a year to prepare for Hiroshi Tanahashi’s retirement, yet during his final match on Sunday, I couldn’t get myself to believe that his career was about to be over. It’s not that I’m…

Moral Orel and the UK Office are both really bleak and edgelordy things that end in surprisingly heartfelt ways that pay off the premise much better than you'd expect. also both of these endings are Christmas-themed
Given that apparently the Stranger Things finale was meh (idk, didn't watch it, just the scuttlebutt) and we're not that far removed from the disastrous GOT finale that retroactively made everyone have never cared about the show:

What's the *best* ending to a show you've ever seen? Quote/reply etc

Did not know until reading this that the US still controls Iraq’s oil revenue.

“EO13303 … has been renewed annually by every US president, including Joe Biden. This executive order essentially places control over Iraq’s oil revenues under the discretion of the US President.”

Assuming they bought new X5 Protection VR6s, those are built in South Carolina and cost $345,000 each.
Kash Patel made the FBI buy a custom fleet of armored BMW X5 for him to ride around in. trib.al/9pBbwTB

Patel’s FBI spokesperson claimed—without evidence—that this is actually saving the American taxpayer money. The standard version of the X5 costs about $70,000.

Got an end-of-year recommendation list here for people with a refined gaming palate:

www.pcgamer.com/games/i-play...
I played dozens of retro games this year, and these are the ones I still whole-heartedly recommend going into 2026
Dust off your DOS, reinstall those ROMs, and party like it's 1999.

Were classical statues painted horribly?

It is often suggested that modern viewers dislike painted reconstructions of Greek and Roman statues because our taste differs from that of the ancients. This essay proposes an alternative explanation.

it's so goofy to believe making software that mimics human thought is related in any meaningful way to making software that thinks. building the most amazing lifelike animatronic horse the world ever saw does not represent progress if your goal is to create a real horse. huge waste of time actually

since other people are doing it, here's a 50 indie game recommendation thread (entirely separate from the 50 indie games i have enjoyed thread i made a few days ago, which is here - bsky.app/profile/ella...). feel free to mute the thread if it's annoying
New rule this year: If you post "Play more indie games" during the game awards, you are required to make a thread recommending 50 of them.

As I get older I actively squash most "the old days were better" feelings like they're intrusive thoughts, but the old internet was an objectively better place, full of actual people making things just for the joy of creation. I'm understanding now why older generations don't stfu about the 1960s.

generational discourse can be solved once and for all by distinguishing between "remembers no computers", "remembers no personal computers", and "remembers no cell phones". everything before that fought in wars. everything after that is, best case scenario, inventing the borg
we really do exist.
