Finding that setting the monster strength to Strong in DQ7R makes it feel "just right" without making it grindier like on straight Hard Mode.
Normal battles are still pretty breezy but the bosses pose a decent challenge this way.

I can't remember where I read it but there was an interview with one of the original Final Fantasy devs where they talked about how the mountains were drawn in high-contrast black & white because the rainbow shimmer of the NTSC signal produced an effect like they were covered with crystal fragments
