"The idea of deporting people with settled status is disgusting, and anyone proposing it should be immediately drummed out of polite society. Breaking promises made in good faith to our friends and neighbours is racist, extremist and immoral."

I'm basically shouting at the sky here, but still.
It’s racist, it’s extremist and it’s immoral
The right is still calling for deportations, and the government is still being cowardly about it. Also: London’s first green belt; some notes on a shark; and some news, on my next book.

Also, if you're "in bed with flu", it's almost certainly Covid.
After a long pause, I've just done another England Covid & NHS update as we head into the autumn/winter season.

TLDR: we're in a significant Covid wave now, the NHS is stretched, get boosted if you're eligible.

NHS frontline staff are refusing the flu jab in ever-greater numbers and putting patients at risk. Almost 9 in 10 at one of England’s largest hospital trusts were unvaccinated last winter.

Appalling selfishness towards disabled patients that’s sadly not surprising. www.thetimes.com/uk/healthcar...

Want to repeat that if folks even wore masks just where it’s easy—in the grocery store, on the subway, sitting at your desk at work—we could likely knock down community transmission substantially, and make life a lot safer in places where mitigation is harder—like nursing homes.
PSA: One of those anecdotal data points that might be useful to know—more than a quarter of my mom's ward at her nursing home has contracted Covid in the last 10 days or so.

Whenever I go to the hospital in my N95, people back away from me

They sanitize their hands. Some use their sleeve to open a door I’ve touched

Many won’t share the elevator with me

They all share two things in common:

None are masked
They don’t want to get sick

Public health has failed.

It's never too late to start wearing a mask again! Wear them in public, in almost any context but especially when you're indoors, when 50%+ others present aren't masking, if you're in close physical proximity with others, and/or if there's scant ventilation (including lack of wind outdoors).

You do not have to accept repeat Covid infections as inevitable.

Mitigations work. Layers work best.

Get your booster. Clean & ventilate the air. Test and stay home when sick.

Perhaps most important of all, wear a well fitted N95.

It protects you & those around you. Community care can save us!

I think we can put to rest the notion that offshore wind turbines spoil views and economies. The fact is that they can make coastal sites far more interesting and boost tourism as people travel to experience them, sometimes even up close.

Boat tours to see the turbines are "surprisingly popular."

A significant element of that harm was the extreme, psychological distress it was causing these kids...
