The turn to slop is something we actually have a lot of power over. We choose what art we engage with and whose art we engage with. We have the ability to choose films based on original ideas, to read books instead of just doom scroll, to talk about poetry instead of just Vanderpump.

Advocacy depends on powerful rhetoric, economical language, and rhetorical skill. Poetry is the only way you’re going to learn skills like metonymy, the effect of stressed syllables, scansion, rhetorical methods only the most skilled orators use to this day. Please stop devaluing the humanities
If you are providing me with an education that is low utility in the world then it’s a disservice. My composition class spent four weeks on poetry. I’m sorry, but that only would’ve been useful if I wanted to be a poet. I don’t need to know iambic pentameter in order to be a victim advocate.

@handsoffnyc.bsky.social is training thousands of New Yorkers on how to protect their neighbors from ICE. Today, they are currently running two trainings in Brooklyn and the Bronx, both of which hit capacity because interest was so high.

there are certain words that are so ridiculous they simultaneously delight and offend me. i still remember when @helloalexroberts.bsky.social explained what both a meeple and a grognard is in the same conversation. i made the same face then as i did just now, confirming that "greeble" is a real word

Listening to Cameron Kunzelman interviewing Jacob Geller about essay writing and the vagaries of making an income on YT. Laughed out loud when Geller observed that Mr. Beast probably has terrible conversion rates on his ad sponsorships bc he targets children, aka people who don't have credit cards
