![Interviewer: You play an immortal witch hunter in your new film. What would you do if you were immortal?
Vin Diesel: I spent three months in the woods thinking that very thing. That was the big allure of playing this character - what would I do? How do you play an immortal character? There is a melancholy that goes with living for 800 years. In Tolkien's early works, Eru Ilúvatar is the god of Arda [the world of Middle Earth], and he creates two races: Men and Elves. Which race do you think he preferred?
Interviewer: Men?
Vin Diesel: Yes! And because he preferred men, what gift do you think he gave them?
Interviewer: Mortality?
Vin Diesel: Brilliant! You are still with me. Even in The Lord Of The Rings, you see a kind of melancholy that is associated with elves. And that's because Tolkien felt there was some kind of sorrow associated with living forever and that men, because they were mortal, had a spur to life that made them more excited and more invested, and gave them greater stakes.
Interviewer: Do you ponder this stuff much?
