Today marks the 50th anniversary of the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald on #LakeSuperior. If you haven't seen this, here is a phenomenal GIS Story Map of the Fitzgerald's final voyage, courtesy of my colleagues at the @nws.noaa.gov office in Marquette, MI.

The annual winter outlook from @nws.noaa.gov just dropped!
NOAA’s National Weather Service Winter Outlook has been released.

This outlook shows the likely temperature and precipitation the U.S. could experience during meteorological winter (December 1, 2025 through February 28, 2026) and drought conditions through January 31, 2026.

The June 20, 2025 Enderlin, ND tornado was just upgraded to an EF-5 earlier this morning. This breaks the 12 year drought of EF-5 tornadoes in the US (last was the May 20, 2013 Moore, OK tornado).

I saw this report on NBC Nightly News this evening. I used to have Aetna for my health insurance, and frankly, their actions in this story are not surprising. Glad I dropped them years ago.

Her spine surgery was denied. Doctors say it's all too common.
Insurance denied 18-year-old Nala White’s surgery for degenerative disc disease. After NBC News reached out, it was approved the next day.

Year to date (1/1-5/22), @nws.noaa.gov offices have issued 10,939 #SevereThunderstorm and #Tornado Warnings, slightly ahead of 2011. Of those, 2,126 (19.5%) were issued in the last week alone. I want to express thanks to my colleagues, #meteorologists, EMs, & first responders for their hard work!

This is quite the video of a UAV flying inside a tornado. For a split second, you can actually see multiple suction vortices as it broke through the outer wall of the tornado.

Today, I said goodbye to two of my NWS Quad Cities colleagues as they head off to retirement, along with three others in my office over the past few months. This video by Cole Vaughn is an excellent tribute to those leaving NOAA. Thank you all for your service to America! 🫡 🇺🇲
What a wonderful video from Cole Vaughn in tribute to all of the many NOAA staff leaving federal service this week. To all of my colleagues, thank you for your service, and I hope you are as proud of NOAA and our work as I am.

My heart goes out to my colleagues in the southern Mississippi River region. I did a brief forecaster exchange with WFO Memphis a few years ago, and they were such great hosts to me. Seeing them go through a historic weather event like this is just heartbreaking. @nws.noaa.gov
This just in from the Memphis National Weather Service Forecast Office. They have a "...tremendous backlog of storm reports that still need to be posted." Full statement is below with alt text. #arwx #mowx #mswx #tnwx

Oof, that is a lot of rainfall coming for the mid-Mississippi River Valley. 15+" possible over the next few days! Classic training convection signal with copious amounts of Gulf moisture into a baroclinic zone. 😬

So for the first time in Warn-on-Forecast history, THREE simultaneous domains are being run in realtime to capture different weather regimes (fire, severe, and winter). Time to push the limits on what can be done with this cloud-based system!
