An Oregon pilot program giving cash to homeless youths sees a staggering reduction in homelessness. The program gave participants $1,000 cash payments each month for two years, and at the end of the project's first phase, 91% of participants reported being in stable housing.

This applies to so many things.
re: roblox dude's interview crashout. the thing he wants to say but can't is "at scale, kids are gonna get hurt. that is the price for scale." the thing nobody wants to say out loud is "maybe scaling to a level where harm isn't manageable is bad, and scale should be contained"

This post contains rough publishing-world news, but also, can I just say? This is great, honest comms, worth a read. I like the Deadlands—and, full disclosure, I have done work for them. They are good folks, straight shooters, and I'm glad they're sticking around even though they need more support.

Most of my friends are not extremely online and will never see this, so I am safe. Also I would never hurt them, so they are safe.
If you think your friend group doesn’t have one, please consider YOU may be the entity.

Please stop using language that suggests that people with criminal records are appropriate targets for this administration's violence. One in three adults has a criminal record. Stop playing sacrifice games with fascists. Stop surrendering entire categories of people in your own mind.

I agree that the trauma of the initial year certainly plays a role, but I think the much bigger factor to point at is the ongoing forced infection and the well documented multi-systemic damage (including brain damage) that repeated infections is doing.

The story is repeated infections.
Every time Covid and learning loss hits the news, people act like the only factor is folk staying home and learning online, rather than… Living through a global mass death event.

Workers should be able to move as freely and easily as owners do.
Anything short of open borders is bigotry. I mostly keep this one quiet because it's so far from political reality that it's not worth talking about, but there's really no morally justifiable reason that I should be able to move to Utah, but a Guatemalan guy should not.

There's a beautiful and very funny passage in Chip Kidd's The Cheese Monkeys about experiencing this kind of eyeball-realigning integration of design learning; I used to show it to people all the time. I was raised by a calligrapher/artist, and I will never be able to shed the dark knowledge.

I continue to pay for and read @defector.com even though I am totally not a sports person because they keep making space for genuinely lovely and intelligent writing on all kinds of subjects (...and for David J. Roth occasionally eviscerating a politician with brutal glee). This is the former.

I don’t care who you are, the one thing that links all of the -isms and bigotries together and sets them on fire is eugenics and ableism.

They’ve been playing you all the entire time. There is no progress in this country for ANYTHING without equity for disabled people.

Dear Baltimore,
If possible, please stop catching on fire. Things are tough enough for everyone right now. Also—now speaking from pure selfishness—I only moved here a few years ago. I'd love to get to know you better, and parts of you keep going up in smoke.
Stay strong,
Jo

And tell them to remove Schumer and Durbin from their posts as minority leader and whip. We know they won't do it, but they fuckin' need to hear just how done everyone is with the party leadership.

I think a lot about the story Carl Reiner told: he’d have been a sewing machine repairman if not for a free WPA drama class. That led to other theater work, to Sid Caesar, to Mel Brooks, and all the rest. All because of one free class paid for by a government that felt the arts were worth teaching.
you ever think about the works progress administration? I sure do. I wish that was a thing now. I would be so glad to contribute my labor to like. A random ass local bridge

Question for‬ @moderation.bsky.app: Why's this getting labeled as "Rude"? Do all posts that cuss about Mamdani's mayoral victory or Cheney's death get this label? Not from what I've seen! Is there...some other reason? I have a guess, and I'd love to be wrong!
“He doesn’t have a mandate” are you fucking kidding? Dick Cheney died the day Zohran is elected he has the mandate of HEAVEN

Yes. Many ingredients, but this was huge—and immensely dispiriting because everyone with a shred of real political insight has spent about twenty years BEGGING the Dems to fight, to meaningfully distinguish themselves as more than Republican Lite, to give people something to vote *for*. So! Onward.
going back to ringing the bell that Trump's win in 2024 wasn't because of a huge cultural shift to the right, especially among young voter blocks that went for him, as much as it was a general frustration with Biden, with centrism, and with the lack of a clearly articulated positive vision from dems

There was a striking consistency to the elections across states that really fits just one possible explanation: people are mad at President Donald Trump and voting for the opposition party.

One part of the story is that the Democratic base turned out. But another part is that swing voters swung.
Why Democrats won the 2025 elections
Democrats romped in both high-profile and low-profile elections Tuesday, in what clearly seemed like a national trend.

I would like to wish everyone with lots of judgmental things to say about how poor people eat a very Shut the Fuck Up.
"What should poor people be allowed to eat?" seems to be a burning question for those who aren't poor, have never been poor, and can afford to eat what they like, but want to keep poor people from eating anything that tastes really good. "No fresh meat," said Iowa, a few years ago.
