I’ve seen a few folks go for the “if you simply must watch that new Harry Potter show just pirate it” and sorry. No. Just no. Just don’t watch it. At all. Ever. Break free of it. It’s time. You’ll be ok. I promise. I know it mattered to you as a kid. Find new things, it’s healthier. Just move on.

obviously this is bad, but it’s long been true of other countries we praise to the skies for their healthcare and a lot of progressive Americans don’t want to acknowledge that as a huge vector of oppression. there are a lot of places I couldn’t emigrate to even if I wanted bc they have BMI limits
Obesity's now on the list of considerations, as well as cancer, & mental health, that may result in denial of an immigrant visa.

A new report from @chrisbratt.bsky.social suggests the firing of over 30 workers from Rockstar Games was related to UK statutory recognition laws.
Almost 10% of Rockstar’s UK workforce was close to being recruited to a new union, which is one of the thresholds for enforced employer recognition.

Rockstar Games Accused of Firing Union Employees to Avoid Statutory Recognition
Former Rockstar employees told People Make Games the union was “very close” to statutory recognition, which would have forced recognition.

Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell. I think it might legit be the best modern fantasy novel. It's so deep and breathtakingly rich in ways few worlds are
performative reading, lack of reading skills, nobody's reading anymore -- NO!
tell me about a book that changed you
for me? the *extremely* ahistorical novel, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY which I read at 13 and was like, "Oh, art can be *everything* to a maker, for good and bad"

I appreciate that folks who don't work in an ed school are discovering or re-discovering the reading wars today on the skies (complimentary). It's my big example of why higher ed scholar fights have nothing on k12. That and the math wars out in northern California.

I'm thinking through a side hustle. In addition to the actual hustle I am looking through the administrative bullshit you need to do to get a small business up and running.
Fuck the entrepreneurial spirit. I want somebody to do all this shit for me. I want to show up, do my job, and go home

this is a rich text but my favorite part is that despite being presumably good at math, her husband is so illiterate that he cannot read a baby's report card
I think the belief by the powerful that "people will put up with many things if you are excellent at math" is incredibly revealing in terms of understanding How We Got Here

The thing is that if you get your data from DoorDash, it might be more convenient but the costs add up in the long run, because it’s really better and cheaper to just go directly to the data place and pick it up yourself.
They’ve laid off so many people that the government is now getting its economic data from DoorDash.

It's not just the NHS (though that's a huge component) most care facilities rely on immigrant labor. Babies, seniors, you name it, and there's a layer of the labor force in the West (US, UK, Canada, etc) that is composed almost entirely of immigrants from lower income countries.
The elephant in the room when it comes to UK immigration discourse these days is the NHS. Immigrants are the lifeblood of the system, and across the spectrum the political class is quite simply in denial about the impact some of the policies being proposed would have on hospitals.

in Paris, I had to see a same-day doctor & I found one. was gravely warned that, as a foreigner, I’d have to pay 32 euros & I laughed & laughed
a friend there said “make sure you get X kind of doctor, not Y, because the Y kind charges 74 WHOLE EUROS” & once again I bitterly, bitterly laughed 😭

The only problem with this scale is that if one DOES go to the hospital for help with pain at a 10, they do not help. They assess you to see if you are dying and if you are not, send you home and tell you to follow up with primary care.
