they came with manuals, but those manuals often haven’t survived, so people are playing games blind that weren’t designed to be played blind. E.g. the original Zelda manual had a map of the whole game. www.nintendo.co.jp/clv/manuals/...

yeah the way it brings back a browsing experience is why I love Whatnot. Albums I’ve bought based on Whatnot sellers showing me what they thought was cool:
- Akina Nakamori: Second; Amii Ozaki: Points (@capcitypop.bsky.social)
- Gentle Giant: The Power and the Glory
- Guru: Jazzmatazz Volume 1
The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste
Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.

many tech posters evangelize about whatever the current trend is because they are desperately looking for validation and will never have enough of it. they’re telling you “AI is good” right now and they don’t care if you use it, they just want you to tell them they are smart. my dudes, get a dog

when I started in tech in 2009 in consulting, many corporate clients had their own email servers running on dedicated instances hosted by Rackspace. If the average bluesky user is 38 the odds you’ve sent a private email in your lifetime are decent, but it was at least 15 years ago.
It is important for you to realize that you have probably never once in your life sent a private email. That’s just not how email works. Sure, turn off whatever Gmail features you want, but you’re just playing whack-a-mole with the technical realities of email as a concept.

Relying on ChatGPT to teach you about a topic leaves you with shallower knowledge than Googling and reading about it, according to new research that compared what more than 10,000 people knew after using one method or the other.

ok, an update: I made this comment in a thread about this @mcsweeneys.net piece: www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/i-w...

since then, lobste.rs admins took it down the thread for not relating to computing. You can't make this stuff up!

today in "comcast/xfinity's home security shit is spying on you and intercepting TLS traffic" their shit broke Google Docs, I can see Google Docs when tethered to my phone but not on my home internet. Just an outrageous breach of trust from an ISP.

this is what Elon Musk and AI sloppers do not understand. Rather than wanting to understand it, they want everyone else to forget it.
In 2006 a high school English teacher asked students to write to a famous author & ask for advice.

KURT VONNEGUT - born 103yrs ago today - was the only one to respond.

His reply was a doozy.

the tech industry cannot ever come to terms with its participation in atrocities because every technology/programming forum is populated at least in part by insufferable nerds that scream “off topic!!! off topic!!!!” about any post that makes them even slightly uncomfortable

man I believe so much in the concept of the ATProto but between this, Jay saying “books are there to serve me” and one of the engineers saying that anti-AI sentiment is a type of racism… I am just so, so disappointed in their ability to interpret society. Truly bleak stuff.

Good article by @im.giovanh.com about a "cozy" airport security game.

Wholesome games tend to reimagine labor -and reality as a whole- as we'd like it to be: beautiful, tidy, meaningful, social... but why would there be terrorist threats in this utopia?
