There's a 19c Irish Orientalist poem "Lalla Rookh" about a 'rose cheeked' Mughal India beauty caught in a political love triangle.

*Lalla is actually tulip, but mistranslated as rose often

After writing "Orientalism", Edward Said wrote about how 1930's Tarzan was SEXY, but the EMBOURGEOISEMENT of Tarzan kept on increasing the size of his loincloth + Jane's jungle bikini until Tarzan lost his SEXY.

Covered the colonialism too, but Said wants you to know how SEXY Tarzan used to be.
Controversy The film has acquired a cult status, largely due to O’Sullivan wearing one of the most revealing costumes on screen to that time — a halter-top and a loincloth that left her thighs and hips exposed. Because Jane was a cultivated lady from England (not Baltimore, as in Burroughs' novel), with manners and poise, her wearing such a provocative outfit was particularly risqué and symbolic of her sexual freedom. In this pre-Code film, Jane sleeps in the nude, swims nude with Tarzan, is constantly touched by Tarzan, has a scene in which she is stranded in the jungle naked, and is seen nude in silhouette when dressing in a well lit tent. That Jane and Tarzan sleep together is all the more startling by Hollywood standards because they are not married; the end credits list O'Sullivan as Jane ‘Parker,’ emphasizing that she was single and living in sin.[6] However, a conversation early in the film suggests that they have been married.[7] Tarzan brings breakfast to Jane in their treetop shelter. When he says, “Never forget, I love you.” “ Love who?” Jane prompts...”Love my wife,” he replies. In its 1934 review, Variety referred to the pair as “Mr. and Mrs. Tarzan”.[8] Weissmuller's Tarzan had several Janes, of whom only Maureen O'Sullivan really counted in my opinion. An Irishwoman, O'Sullivan had a British accent, unlike her literary prototype, who was Jane Porter from Wisconsin. As Johnny's first lady she acted with a fresh abandon never equaled since. In the days when films were ruled by an iron law concerning nudity (even belly buttons were not supposed to be seen), O'Sullivan appeared almost naked: there was a notorious scene in Tarzan and His Mate, the second Weissmuller film, in which as she dives into the water she sheds her nightgown and quickly reveals a breast This scene was removed or pared down in subsequent releases, but I am certain that I saw the original version, since the recollection of that astonishing sight on the screen seems definitively imprinted on my memory (or imagination, as the case may be). Between them, Weissmuller and O'Sullivan seem to have had a sexual paradise: he worshiped her; she fretted, scolded, and smiled demurely, but without all the encumbrances of suburban domesticity around them-no lawns to mow, no car pools, no plumbing problems-and in between adven-tures, they seemed to spend a lot of time making out. What scenes there were of "jungle life," whether those were of swimming or swinging through the trees, or just lying around in their tree house, were shot through with sexual suggestion. After all, they rarely wore any clothes to speak of. One of the saddest things, therefore, was how their basic loincloth costumes grew progressively from tiny fig leaves to grotesquely large and flappy dowager beach costumes. With that change the sexual motif diminished and the tree house grew larger and more elaborate (the change is obvious in Tarzan Escapes, 1936): one could watch the embourgeoisement of the Tarzan family taking place before one's eves.

Chapter IV. I now came in full sight of the building. Yes, it had been made by hands, and hollowed partly out of a great rock. I should have supposed it at the first glance to have been of the earliest form of Egyptian architecture. It was fronted by huge columns, tapering upward from massive plinths, and with capitals that, as I came nearer, I perceived to be more ornamental and more fantastically graceful that Egyptian architecture allows. It reminded me of symbolical images of Genius or Demon that are seen on Etruscan vases or limned on the walls of Eastern sepulchres—images that borrow the outlines of man, and are yet of another race. It was tall, not gigantic, but tall as the tallest man below the height of giants. Its chief covering seemed to me to be composed of large wings folded over its breast and reaching to its knees; the rest of its attire was composed of an under tunic and leggings of some thin fibrous material. It wore on its head a kind of tiara that shone with jewels, and carried in its right hand a slender staff of bright metal like polished steel. But the face! it was that which inspired my awe and my terror. It was the face of man, but yet of a type of man distinct from our known extant races. The nearest approach to it in outline and expression is the face of the sculptured sphinx—so regular in its calm, intellectual, mysterious beauty. Its colour was peculiar, more like that of the red man than any other variety of our species, and yet different from it—a richer and a softer hue, with la… But the greatest curiosity in the collection was that of three portraits belonging to the pre-historical age, and, according to mythical tradition, taken by the orders of a philosopher, whose origin and attributes were as much mixed up with symbolical fable as those of an Indian Budh or a Greek Prometheus. From this mysterious personage, at once a sage and a hero, all the principal sections of the Vril-ya race pretend to trace a common origin. The portraits are of the philosopher himself, of his grandfather, and great-grandfather. They are all at full length. The philosopher is attired in a long tunic which seems to form a loose suit of scaly armour, borrowed, perhaps, from some fish or reptile, but the feet and hands are exposed: the digits in both are wonderfully long, and webbed. He has little or no perceptible throat, and a low receding forehead, not at all the ideal of a sage’s. He has bright brown prominent eyes, a very wide mouth and high cheekbones, and a muddy complexion. According to tradition, this philosopher had lived to a patriarchal age, extending over many centuries, and he remembered distinctly in middle life his grandfather as surviving, and in childhood his great-grandfather; the portrait of the first he had taken, or caused to be taken, while yet alive—that of the latter was taken from his effigies in mummy. このポスター、今回京都でかなり目に留めていただけたのだけど、一番印象的だったのは「このポスターの絵の本はどれですか」と男性から尋ねられたこと。
「毎年年賀絵を描いてまして…今年の絵をポスターにしまして…」と説明した時のあのかたの怪訝そうな表情…申し訳ありませんでした確かにポスターって大体売ってる本の表紙絵とかですよね。
恥入りながらポストカードだけ差し上げました。

So many thoughts concerning the world jostle inside my head. When I speak in public or write a piece, I try to narrow my topic and present it in a positive way without expressing my destructive negativity. But that is just one part of me. I am a person whose negative aspects-brutality, resentment, hatred-are much stronger than other people's. Though have dangerous moments when my control fails, when I suppress my negative aspects and live my life normally, I am thought of as a good person. That is not my real character. I don't know what kind of person I really am. There seems to be another "Hayao Miyazaki" unfamiliar to me. I try not to care about this discrepancy anymore. Yet when I see this collection of my writings and my statements, even I can't guarantee that it is the real Hayao Miyazaki.
