25 years ago today, SCOTUS elected George W Bush president of the United States by blocking completion of a voting canvass in Florida. A subsequent canvass by the Associated Press showed that Bush's rival, Al Gore, had won the race in Florida—and thus the contest for the presidency—by 700 votes.

For fuck’s sake.

Also, consider not being Facebook friends with coworkers. Seems like a bad idea to me.
Imperative to remember why Facebook was made in the first place: a repellent asshole who still has to engineer his own alternate reality to make friends wanted to monitor girls’ relationship statuses
Just saw an ad where a man draws the name of a female coworker for a gift exchange, and uses Facebook to learn her interests/buy the perfect present. Cute, but we all know he would just ask the nearest woman what to buy her and if he’s researching her Facebook: Run, girl.

after nearly a year of covering mostly what gets labeled a Trump administration “distraction”—threatening immigrants and trans people; empowering white nationalists —you know what if (what if), that being what Trump ran on and what Trump is doing, this is the actual substance of the Trump presidency

This guy can F himself into the sun. Forever.
When a cancelled performer reënters the culture, we expect them to offer us a great work, channelling their newfound clarity into the finest art they’ve ever made. With his new comedy show and début novel, has Louis C.K. met the bar?

Louis C.K.’s Next Chapter
In a new standup special, and a début novel, the comedian navigates murky, post-#MeToo terrain: not quite exiled, not quite welcomed back.

rich dudes got freakier after butlers fell out of fashion, like say what you will about having domestic servants but clearly it was some sort of moderating force on old rich dudes having a fancy man follow you around saying shit like "oh dear sir, that wouldn't be very becoming"

I know I don't have a ton of followers, but if you or anybody you know is an audio drama lover, please share this kickstarter that I just backed.

Atypical Artists makes great stuff and I'm pretty excited for Phantom Pulse!
WE ARE LIVE!!!

Help us bring this story about music, queer found family, love, and death to life.

Head to the Kickstarter to, at minimum, look at the absolutely STUNNING art and our wonderful cast!!! And please consider giving if you're able!

Every time I see Ross Douthat's name I remember my friend who was a classmate of his at Harvard telling me that he wrote an article for the Crimson about how knowing that the women he met on campus were on birth control made his boner sad.

On sight.

In reference to my previous share, this is one reason that you should cancel your subscription. The name of the article is a little different when I look at it but "did women ruin the workplace" is still there.
The individuals who are the “deciders” of “what is (is not) fit to print”: AGSulzberger, Kahn, Ryan, Lacey, Healy, Kingsbury+ escape much-warranted criticism behind the institutional mantle.

We think NYT leadership needs to be named & shamed for their “product”.

I work at a University and our campus library provides digital access for free. Works great.
If you’re ever desperate for a Times article, there’s a 90% chance your local library offers free digital access to the Times with a library card. it’s their job to do that for you. you do not have to pay for it yourself. Cancel your sub
one thing that's nice about canceling your New York Times sub is every week you get at least one or two stories shared on here that make you say, "yeah, it rocks that I did that, I only wish I could do it again." highly recommend you cancel yours if you haven't already

i don’t normally endorse block lists (i’m on some, weirdly lumped in with people i myself have blocked) but i don’t see how blocking all these accts with one button is bad.

most importantly, DO NOT ENGAGE WITH THEM. they already own X so they wouldn’t be here if they weren’t trying to start shit.

White women, I beg of you, Please learn the difference between having your feelings hurt and actual systems of oppression.
It’s disheartening that Black people want a space to be among likeminded Black folks and not have to face anti Black racism from the likes of you?
That’s what has your feelings hurt?
And your reasoning is that you’ve *checks notes* say you, as a white woman, have experienced racism.
Girl. 😒
This is disheartening. I want all races in my community and unfortunately I think this is racist. I understand the black community wants to be supported, it’s coming off as a one way street. I’ve encountered racism lately all from mentally unstable black women. Blacksky will further segregate people

I started watching 911 which breaks with my no copaganda shows that aren't about bumbling cops needing a psychic, mentalist, mystery author, forensic anthropologist or other outsider so they can do their jobs. But I really enjoy Angela Bassett chewing scenery goddammit

Trans rights are not the rights of a tiny minority, trans rights are everyone’s rights to self-determination, control of our bodies, and a society where opportunity and aesthetics are not restricted by sex assigned at birth

You should support and defend trans people because trans people are people

Had a teacher call me and a friend "baby killers" in a highschool science class in probably 1989.
One teacher told us “apartheid was good for S Africa;” another lectured that FDR “ruined the country” by making Americans “lazy;” yet another wld force us to watch Alan Greenspan lectures and preface them by saying “now that’s a smart Jew” (the teacher ofc was not Jewish)
