Urbanism—the notion that cities are good, that we should build housing in the dense walkable neighborhoods where people want to live, and that urban governance should prioritize city residents’ quality of life over suburban drivers’ convenience—remains a radical political program in America.
One thing that’s so frustrating living in a city center is the pervasive belief among suburbanites that your neighborhood is nothing more than a consumer experience for them and that the city should bend over backwards to ensure they can speed as fast as possible on their way to buy treats in it.

... and isn't there some link to be made - more elegantly than I'm going to make it - about the reduction of meaning to legibility that helps to open the space for the devoid?

(yes, I'll put another dollar in the Seeing Like A State swearjar)
relatedly Seeing Like a State is an excellent book for none of the obvious textual or subtextual reasons; it made it a lot easier to think about People, in gestalt, and also a lot about Metrics, and how bending People to Metrics makes the metric worthless and causes people to die

Package theft is almost entirely a crime of opportunity that proliferates because of the low chances of getting caught and experiencing consequences.

If police departments actually cared about stopping it they could do so pretty easily with bait packages, GPS trackers, and drones.

Scott Weiner has forced California to build a lot more homes. Now he's running for Nancy Pelosi's seat. Can his "getting shit done" ethos work in a broken Congress?

By running for Nancy Pelosi's seat, he's putting the "Abundance" theory to the test.

"So Wiener’s more than just an interesting lawmaker from America’s third-weirdest city. His nose-to-grindstone, hardcore policy approach could be a key to a political realignment—a long-overdue recognition that addressing housing is necessary for the survival of the Democratic Party."

While I don’t ride or die for Pete Buttigieg, the vitriol directed at him is completely insane.

“When I was younger I wished that I could have taken a pill to turn me straight; but I have accepted and embraced my identity now” is an *extremely* common sentiment from Millennial and older gay people!
When Pete Buttigieg says he would take medicine that makes gay men straight. What do you think is Mr. Buttigieg's attitude towards gays, men and medicine?

Fun fact, when we started, we weren't given proper work PCs. We all just had chromebooks cause it was assumed that's all we needed. We eventually got PCs with graphics cards that weren't compatible with any of our software.

this is why there's a persistent propaganda campaign in conservative media to portray cities as crime-ridden hellholes, because rural conservatives understanding how conservative politics have fucked up their own communities would be devastating to them.
the biggest force for rural resentment of cities in the last three decades is that cities got way better and the countryside got way worse.

It's far more important for a reader (and especially writers) to discover their own personal canons than the ones handed down from above. Anybody wanting to get into any genre should start by reading the books that sound cool to them. One weird trick, I know.
Asimov, Clarke, Heinlein should be required for anyone getting into sci-fi

An easy way to tell which party actually opposes partisan gerrymandering is that the Democrats pushed a law, the "for the people act" in 2021 through the house and 50 votes in the Senate that would ban partisan gerrymandering. Manchin killed it because he wouldn't nuke the filibuster for it
