Hi! I'm a nerdy queer writer w/ work in the anthology Traveling Light from Hugo-finalist podcast @worldbuildcast.bsky.social. A 2x Paralympian, I set a world record in 2004 & won a bronze medal in 2008. So far I'm the only US woman to win an Olympic or Paralympic archery medal in singles since 1996.

The wildest part about the discrepency isn't even the dollar amount but the ratio of asked vs given. Renee and Alex's families asked for $50k & $20k respectively & people gave so much more. Not the case for everyone else.

All links provided in thread.
Current status of the fundraisers for those killed by ICE:
Renee Good: $1,499,580
Alex Pretti: $1,289,249

Parady La: $45,848
Heber Sanchez Dominguez: $47,991
Luis Beltrán Yanez Cruz: $18,640
Victor Manuel Diaz: $2,538
Geraldo Lunas: $2,260
Luis Gustavo Núñez: $1,935

If you’re feeling helpless amidst the ongoing horrors being perpetrated by ICE… engage in mutual aid.

Donate to someone in need. Give to a community library or food bank.

You could also help Rodney Taylor, a disabled double amputee who’s been held by ICE for a year.

His story is often forgotten:
Help Rodney Taylor, a Disabled Double Amputee Being Held by ICE
Rodney has been in the country more than 40 years. He's in solitary confinement in Georgia, being denied disability accommodations and having his medical needs ignored. He must be released.

Keith Porter. Shot & killed by off duty ICE agent.

Silverio Villegas González. Shot & killed by ICE after dropping his kids off at school.

Marimar Martinez. Shot 5 times by ICE after they said “do something b*tch”.

None of the agents responsible have been investigated or charged.

Happy book birthday to this excellent fantasy anthology I recommend all the time for its rich exploration of stories by disabled authors!
Artifice & Access released on January 25th, 2025, and it has been such a wonderful time seeing all the love for this #anthology & the stories within 💖

Remember the other day when I was saluting my friend Greg Ketter, owner of Minneapolis’ DreamHaven Books? This is him the following day. Greg will never say this, so I will — now is a great time to buy books from DreamHaven. Support Americans who stand up vs. 🧊. dreamhavenbooks.com

Have you gotten a copy of my poetry chapbook, Offerings to a Tumbled Temple? It's out now from @purpleinkpress.bsky.social I am proud to share these very vulnerable embodied poems about healing my relationship with my body and being in kinship with other disabled folks. I hope you read it!

You don’t know your role yet maybe, but we are all finding out just what we have to offer.

In Minneapolis, one man knew immediately what he could offer and said “Bring me your clothing”.

I came to Minneapolis to report on what's going on, and one of the main questions I showed up with is "just what is the scale of the resistance?" After all, we're all used to the news calling Portland a "war zone" or whatever when it's just some protests in one part of town.

A Black man named Keith Porter was shot and killed by an ICE officer on New Year’s Eve.

Marimar Martinez was shot five times by an ICE officer in Chicago who went on to brag about leaving seven holes in her body.

This is not new but it is expanding.
Your reminder that what happened to Renee Nicole Good is something that happens regularly in America. This is not new, but it is an expanded version of militarized people targeting Black people in particular.

From ICE detention to murder with impunity, we've been doing it. Now it's broadened.

I want crocodile technology. What's croc tech? It's tech that follows the philosophy of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Crocodiles have found the winning formula and stuck to it. You think crocs are adding apps, subs, Bluetooth, AI, data collection, and internet connectivity?

Quick reminder that law enforcement hasn’t stopped killing unarmed Black people just because other law enforcement is now killing unarmed white people.
Black people five years ago: you know, they can kill anyone they want to out there

Everybody today: hot damn, did you know they can kill anyone they want to out there?

Anyone else have a book hopscotch problem? I re-read Wild Seed & Dawn by Octavia Butler. I checked out Strange Matings from the library so I could read some analysis of her work. Got distracted by The Last Interview, but first I want to read Positive Obsession so I get all the historical context. 1/

I've been looking forward to reading this, and now it's on sale! A cozy fantasy about a dryad with chronic pain and fatigue recuperating in an Edwardian spa? Yes, please!
Lilje got through the lottery!

Amidst all the chonky epic fantasy books, here's a gentle little one that'll amke you smile and maybe cry but feel very alive I think.

Just over a day left in the sale so be quick!

Just started Positive Obsession: The Life and Times of Octavia E. Butler by Susana M. Morris and I already love it.

Two Butler quotes I'd never heard before:

"To be remembered
Long after your death
Is, inevitably,
To be lied about."

"There's nothing new under the sun, but there are new suns."

The trouble is that we have a bad habit, encouraged by pedants and sophisticates, of considering happiness as something rather stupid. Only pain is intellectual, only evil interesting.

Nooo, the Austin Public Library says "digital services currently unavailable" and won't let me check out any new audiobooks!

This is bad because, like a cat with a full food dish, I somehow don't feel in the mood for all the [number redacted] other books I currently have checked out 😅

Been reading up on fawn responses this year. Loved the book Fawning by Dr Ingrid Clayton, and I just started Are You Mad At Me? by Meg Josephson.

I keep thinking about my own fawn responses, rooted in my childhood experience of hospitals and doctors. I want a book on fawning and disability!

post a perfect album from the 90s that isn't nirvana, soundgarden, pearl jam, or alice in chains.

(I could listen endlessly to 1200 Curfews, a 1995 live album by @indigogirlsmusic.bsky.social. The concert banter feels like a hug from an old friend and "Virginia Woolf" always invokes hopeful tears.)
