Science stuff, but not a scientist. Old skoool DCist (RIP!) and former Eater DC. Baltimoron at heart. Very random posts about food, art, climate, science, publishing, and journalism.

Nuzzi's fawning coverage of the sociopathic conspiracy crank she was having an affair with aided his rise to political power, which he is using to perpetrate the worst intentional public health catastrophe of our unnecessarily shortened lifetimes, and THAT is the STORY.

I helped build our deck when I was 9, and I did a lot of the hammering, and I was just toothpick limbs. Yikes.

More Chinese students in US universities = better aid packages for US students attending US universities. That's the actual math. The people arguing otherwise are either profoundly ignorant or want to dismantle higher education -- especially public education--anyway.

Because international student enrollment is so often used as a cudgel in discussions about immigration, this is a good time to remind people that international students aren't taking up spaces for US students at state schools, they are paying full tuition that FUNDS SCHOLARSHIPS FOR US STUDENTS.

we can't function as a democracy if people granted unique powers -- Congress, SCOTUS, media -- abdicate their responsibilities

I'm shocked how the concept of duty has been erased from our social order

A Dead Cat, A Lawyer's Call And A 5-Figure Donation: How Media Fell Short On Epstein
Why did it take some of the nation's biggest news organizations so long to take seriously the accusations against the late Jeffrey Epstein? Allegations about his behavior go back more than a decade.

With all the Watson stuff, it reminds me of the scientists with Epstein ties. I’ve always felt like we took them at their word, but some are now known dirtbags. And some of them I worked with and are the rudest scientists I’ve met. (And with anecdotes from others.) www.theverge.com/2019/7/13/20...

This is actually good spin, or would have been. But the fact that the Democratic cave happened without even a coordinated, agreed-upon message like this indicates the depth of the leadership void.

Yo @kaine.senate.gov this is how you do this. Don’t be a coward.
I’ve voted 7 times to reopen the government in a way that holds Trump accountable for his lawlessness and prevents a health care crisis.

I’m prepared to work toward a compromise, but this “deal” before us does not come close to meeting those terms. Voting NO.
