So much I want to read in here!
It has been a bracing moment for American federalism, with both unprecedented efforts to extend executive control over state and local govts, novel forms of subnational resistance. Where is federalism going? Paul Nolette and I have edited a new issue of Publius on that question. Short thread:

Big part of why all these game studios are coming out with ridiculous statements of "oh yeah, we use generative AI, but not for anything important!" is because they know consumers hate AI but investors want to hear the studio is using AI, and they're trying to please both

The third paragraph reads as if the Russians wrote it. Maybe they did. In any event, it is an atrociously big lie; 1984-grade, as Aaron Rupar rightly says.
War is peace. Russia is fully committed to peace in Ukraine.

NOT A DARK LORD BUT A FUCKING QUEEN
The Lord of The Rings movies were rated PG-13. By current rules that means that each film could contain one use of the word "Fuck". Which line are you altering to insert the most useful swear word?

People like Musk and RFK Jr. are entirely fine with the use of government power to shut down actors who are drawing attention to their conspiracy theories and promotion of hate. And in the same breath present themselves as defending free speech.

I did not understand this: one of the five Europeans the US has barred from traveling to the United States...is a permanent resident who lives with his family in the US.

Now he is worried about being arrested and deported for the crime of monitoring online hate.

The perfect way to celebrate Christmas is by dropping bombs on foreign countries, apparently.

The blatant selling of pardons is perhaps the clearest instance of criminal conduct authorized by SCOTUS. Pardons are a quintessential "official act." So, even when Trump takes a bribe to issue one, he is presumably above the criminal law.

Honestly it’s legit insane how badly most of the world has adapted to the post-pandemic new reality.

The US has (ikr? ffs) been really unusually effective at handling this!
Here's each G7 country's cumulative increase in real GDP per capita, since just before the pandemic:

🇺🇸 +11.3%
🇮🇹 +7.7%
🇯🇵 +3.7%

Former head of trust and safety at Twitter, Yoel Roth, demonstrating the intellectual dishonesty of “In Covid’s Wake” by showing how they distorted his own words to make them say the opposite of what he was arguing.
A small (personal) example of this book’s intellectual dishonesty:

My father-in-law is reading In Covid’s Wake, and excitedly told me he found a passage where I’m quoted. The quote in question is me saying the FBI worked to censor speech on social media.

Huh? When did I say that?!

An enraging trend right now, from CBS to the CDC, of people actively undermining institutions, then taking the reins of those institutions and claiming they need to rebuild the trust they helped destroy. (Also, people already trusted 60 Minutes.) bsky.app/profile/just...
Bari Weiss just sent this Christmas Eve email to the CBS News staff about "building trust," which includes her tripling down on spiking the CECOT piece "to make sure it's comprehensive and fair."

One CBS staffer tells me: "She really has no idea how insulting she comes across."

It’s the opening line of Weiss’ staff-wide email and unrelatedly a common refrain of populist attacks on institutions.

First you break trust in the thing. Then you point at the thing and say “hey, nobody trusts this, we got to make it more like I want it to be”.
I’m not a fan of “this institution that has been attacked non stop for years by a propaganda machine has lost the public’s trust” as proof of anything but the need to deal with the propaganda machine.
