Part of this week’s newsletter was inspired by the post below. Was there a way to show the distance between normal Americans and the super wealthy?

No sorry I will not allow treating transgender people as anything less than full and equal members of American society be characterized as purity and something to be papered over to defeat the right. If people like Buttigieg and Newsom want to throw those rights under the bus we have more options.

Just spoke with former Officer Mike Fanone about the Biden pardon that covers him and other officers who testified before the Jan. 6 committee.

“This is a different kind of American exceptionalism. It’s exceptionally fucked up.”

It is key to remember that lots of perfectly nice *not extremely online people* who leftists could form a popular front with *identify as liberals*.

These are NOT the same people as the wackos posting terminally dumb and homophobic Resist Lib memes on this website: they’re useful normies.
If you use the term "liberal" as a personal or ideological slur it might make you seem in and cool to your lefty mutuals but it is destructive to any broader coalition building that might help the left flank build political power so really it's all about what your goals are

🚨I'm seeing some climate accounts posting overpopulation stuff, so I've removed the paywall from my article on the subject: Overpopulation Is A Racist Trope.
'Overpopulation' Is A Racist Trope. It's Time We Laid It To Rest
A new movie satirises the myth that climate change is a consequence of too many people. In the real world, our overpopulation obsession must be euthanised.

IMO it's not helpful to criticize or get mad at otherwise-well-meaning folks who are opposed to the Hunter Biden pardon

I think those folks are wrong on the merits, but I totally understand where they're coming from and think reasonable minds can disagree

I’ve come to abandon the use case for LLMs to summarize text because the summaries usually miss vital parts and are disappointing when I look closer. Australian government now has proof this is the case.

Another proof that LLMs have more limitations we need to understand.

"What the report finds is that Biden held on to 94% of the people who said they would support him before the debate. For Trump, 86% of people who said they would support him before the debate said they would do so after the debate."

Biden's poor debate performance had almost no impact on voter preference, new report says
A new report shows that despite Biden’s debate performance – poor as it may have been – voter preferences haven't been impacted.

For MSNBC, I wrote about a new study out last week that ought to change the conversation around trans women in women’s sports. www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnb...
Opinion | The Olympic committee studied trans athletes. Conservatives won't like what it found.
Few anti-LGBTQ policies have taken off as quickly as those banning trans women and girls from women’s and girls’ sports.

Nerds are the ones who warned you about cryptocurrency, and NFTs, and the internet of things. Nerds are the ones trying to explain to you that "AI" is just overhyped pattern recognition which we already had for years.

Techbros are not nerds. They're predators.

This is easier to understand when you realize generative AIs are not writing whole sentences or using "intelligence"

They're running loops that add one word at a time based on the prior words, what word is statistically most likely to come next, and an intentional randomness / "heat" setting

Elise Stefanik's deranged efforts to defend Trump are more than just an absurd spectacle. They show that it's getting harder for Republicans to explain away Trump's worsening legal mess with the usual MAGA nonsense.

This gives Dems an opening. 1/

Elise Stefanik’s Deranged Defense of Trump Offers Democrats a Lesson
Even many Republicans can smell that the conventional wisdom about Trump’s legal woes helping him is about to change. Democrats need to play hardball.

Also, even more deeply—and surely someone has made this point—even if we agree on what “the drafters” “wanted,” we only have the record of those ALLOWED TO BE DRAFTERS.

Putatively-objective Originalism makes the normative choice that the silencing of women and ppl of color is … not really an issue.
The great thing about originalist arguments—whether about the 1780s 2A or the 1860s 14A—is that the historical record always provides such a clear set of answers.

We seem to barely be able to agree on what happened in 2020, but we’ve apparently got 1868 on lock.
