Here’s the bottom line for what’s going on with Grok - if the owner of the website is putting his thumb on the scale hard enough for the chatbot to turn into Goebbels, you should be deeply concerned about what he’s doing to the algorithm that you can’t so easily see, and what it’s doing to you

As big as the Mamdani win is, Landers ascent is in some ways even more significant for the national Democratic Party.

Most Dem electeds know that they don't have what Zohran has. But most can at least imagine themselves as a Lander.
NYC Comptroller Brad Lander: "I don't think the line for the [Democratic] party right now is between progressives and moderates; I think it's between fighters and folders."

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

People want to consume media that flatters them instead of challenging them, and there’s now a way to do that at scale, and that incentivizes the production of it. This synergizes well with something @opinionhaver.bsky.social said that has really stuck with me:

From the Grattan Institute: Many Australian primary teachers struggle with math. It's a bigger issue than most realize & it's not unique to Australia. Strong content courses in teacher prep are a must. "We need to set higher standards and go after them.”

The advice I wish I could give all the angry young men is that women will like you if you're having fun without needing them.
But yeah people miss the point of the "find a hobby" advice. They're not telling you to pick up a hobby so you can hit on women. They're telling you that if you go out and do things that you find enjoyable, you will meet people with similar interests some of whom may be open to dating you.

I've been thinking a lot about that bumper sticker which says "everything looks like a conspiracy theory when you don't understand how anything works" and folks it's pretty obvious to me that the people in power right now have absolutely no desire to understand how anything works.

This comment on r/fednews really stood out to me. Trump and Musk want people to think they're firing do-nothing "bureaucrats," but they're really getting rid of people dedicated to serving this country and keeping it operational. I hope these stories get told.

Others have noted it but I will too: The big reason Bluesky is so hot right now is that the people who add value to social media - the frequent posters in specific fields - are here now, talking to each other and creating the "spectator value" that draws users and attention.
