Watched Train Dreams with my wife, and it confirmed my suspicion that I should be going on my "watch all of Terrence Malick" journey solo, since her comment when it ended was "yeah it looked amazing, but it could have had more plot."

My take on the Optic/Haptic vid is: It tries to develop a unifying theory on a broad thesis with a shaky premise (“Why don’t movies look realistic anymore?”) and inevitably winds up with a mess of cherry-picking, self-contradictions, specious reasoning, along with a lot of individually good points.

this is a deeply unsettling fact to have learned at 1am
Additionally, hippos - despite being massive - have almost no fat on them. All of that impressive bulk is muscle.

2% body fat. Compare that to Elephants, which are around 8-10%, or rhinos, which are 10-20%.

The average human is around 20-40%, for reference.

They're *all* muscle.

Movie theatre usher (a young woman) just said to me "happy international men's day!" much to the amusement to my wife.
Today is International Men’s Day.

Not too optimistic about the selection available in Finland being that good for older movies that are currently unavailable in every streaming rental service here, but one can hope. All That Jazz for example is available nowhere here. You can't rent and stream any Altman etc.
Letterboxd Video Store. Coming early December 2025. 👀

I'm struck by this clip of former Obama speechwriter Sarah Hurwitz saying Holocaust education has backfired in part because people Palestinians as victims: "They think the lesson of the Holocaust is…you fight the big powerful people hurting the weak people."

The HBO show did a hell of a job with it's sets to recreate this.
Deadwood circa 1876 & a few years after. Note the huge hole being dug in the street in the 1st pic. Despite its primitive look, in 1878 Deadwood was the 1st US town to have citywide phone service (with a line directly to the White House). There was only 1 phone available though.

I can no longer follow the plot of this show. I suspect the writers and actors can’t either. I don’t think they have a show runner.

Trump is ranting barely coherently to McDonald's franchise owners: "The one pilot said, 'skedaddle!' And that thing just turned on its side -- pppph. And it's so unbelievable. And that knocked out Iran nuclear capability."

I am once again recommending people who haven't seen Red Rooms to watch it. It really fucked me up, yet I keep pushing it to people. 😃
"On paper, RED ROOMS is the ideal horror movie for a person like me, which is to say, a coward. It would be a misnomer to say the film has no violence though—it is violence, a bloodless film that is rich with blood."
