The remote work debate was funny because it forced the question "Is a job something valuable you do or is it a place you go to be watched like daycare" and the answer for a lot of them was yeah it's the daycare thing now come on inside recess is over

A new OECD report confirms that US road safety is an abject failure.

Americans are far more likely to die in a crash than those living in other rich countries. US per capita crash death rates are at least 3x higher than Ireland, Norway, UK, Germany, or Japan.

Not to get all "parenthood changes your whole perspective," but I do think becoming a dad has made me even less tolerant of Bluesky's doomer brigade. I'm completely uninterested in having depressive strangers lecture me about how my daughter's future is written and there's nothing we can do.

The "he's not gonna listen to her" reactions are missing many points. Lots of other people are also hearing it. Lots of people can see him hearing it, then weigh what she's said with what he'll do. Lots of people can see her refusal to surrender these ancient teachings to the latest face of empire
Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde to Trump: "I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now. There are gay, lesbian, and transgender people in Democratic, Republican, and independent families, some who fear for their lives ... and the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals"

politics reporters sit at the kids table of journalism. deeply unserious and unprepared to do anything but kiss ass and have news spoonfed into their mouths like they’re babies learning to eat
Scoop: Privately, there are both tensions and a quiet sense of optimism among the White House press corps around covering Trump 2.0. WHCA prez Eugene Daniels traveled down to Mar-a-Lago to address concerns with the Trump transition team www.cjr.org/political_pr...

It's genuinely one of the best memories I have from college, so so so much fun
One thing I always dug about national championships — I covered more than a dozen WBB Final Fours for SI — was seeing the kids in the marching bands there. Always seemed like a great reward for a season of hard work. Same for dance/cheer etc....

If Notre Dame wins this game they'll turn it into weird lore, if Ohio State wins this game some of the worst people on earth will be momentarily happy before they are reminded that they couldn't score 14 points against a 6-5 team with a QB made of potato.

I will never stop being mad about how the media has treated the anti-trans movement as a group of ordinary people with legitimate concerns rather than the obvious frothing bigots they are.
ABC White House correspondent just released ANOTHER anti-trans EO expected that we did not cover in our piece this morning:

A federal ban on funding to programs that acknowledge and affirm transgender people.

It’s going to get worse than most people realize, in ways we can’t predict, faster than we expect. A lot of people are going to suffer. But it’s also not forever, and it’s more fragile than these people think.

For Gen Z, that’s TikTok.

For Millennials, it was original FourLoko.

Along those lines, I'm struck by how the emergency response to the LA fires has focused on making it easier to rebuild in affected regions, not legalizing more housing in the unaffected areas so that people can resettle there. A truly serious response would touch R-1 zoning in the safe area.
Again, part of the reason why more people than ever are living directly in harm's way is because California's environmental regulations make it easier to build housing in forested, greenfield areas than in the built-up regions that are further from the wildfires. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...
How L.A.'s Housing Development Plays a Role in Wildfire Risk
Fierce winds and months of drought set the conditions for the catastrophic wildfires in Los Angeles, but the growth of housing in fire-prone areas also played a major role.
