Tucked away in the Senate bill to fund the U.S. government is a provision that would ban all hemp products. In PA, that threatens more than 9,000 jobs and $50 million in tax revenue.

The United States’ pivot away from foreign aid and democracy-related programs has “given China an opportunity to portray itself as a more stable and pragmatic—and less judgmental—partner,” writes Jane Harman.

one of the underlying factors in all the Epstein stuff is that his correspondents - even the ones who likely did not participate in abuse themselves - are completely incapable of imagining his victims as people. he is real to them, the girls aren't.
I sometimes feel like they don’t want to end poverty or reduce inequality because they believe they’re entitled to a class of people they can prey upon

Three hours to “Friday’s” third episode
Watch Pluribus on Apple TV. From Vince Gilligan, starring Rhea Seehorn. No, I can’t tell you what it’s about. No, you shouldn’t try to find out. Just trust me. You trust me, right? Go in blind. (Also ignore the stupid ad campaign.)
The only bad part so far is they’ve only released two episodes.

"Spy" takes a while to hit its stride, but it's one of the great Hollywood comedies of the 21st century. Criminally underrated.
Pair this with “Spy” for an Allison-Janney-saying-“cunt” double feature!

Your windshields should be absolutely covered in a sticky mess of bug splats/insect carcasses every time you drive across open country forcing you to stop periodically at gas stations to use their wet squeegees to try and clean up your view of the road at night
Thinking a lot about how poorly our brains recognize long term subtle changes, like climate change or biodiversity loss. We've lost something like 1 out of every 4 individual birds in the US since 1970, more for some species.

There should be at least 25% more birds around you right now.

My political hot take is that US voters should be able to recall elected representatives via petition - at any time.
No more hiding behind election terms.

Mamdani is also Trumpian in that he has multiple ways of bypassing the press entirely. He can make TikToks. He can go on news shows and talk shows—people will book him to appear, and voters will watch. He can give press conferences and speeches, and people will tune in.
Mamdani is the most Trumpian politician the Dems have in the sense that his supporters will give zero shits what the beltway pages write about him and probably see it as success whenever they complain about him, I don't think the press will be very influential re public perception of his tenure
Mamdani is in a no win situation. The press in NYC will respond angrily if he gets his proposals they hate passed. Or, they will call him a failure, if he doesn't get the proposals they hate passed.

If he keeps his organizers energized, he can power through this.

one other very notable thing that's happened is that Republicans in the Senate have responded to his repeated exhortations to nuke the filibuster by totally ignoring him

unlike some other things we've seen, this is absolutely not the behavior of people who think Dems will never hold power again

More Democrats should get more combative with the media, in particular by calling out questions that have an unspoken premise of "GOP voters are realer Americans than you," or in this case, "the president can break the law if voters in a city choose a mayor according to their own preferences."
In the 1st question of his brief interview with Mamdani. Anderson Cooper reports Trump’s strongman threats to punish NYC if the Mayoral candidate is elected, as if he gets to select where funding goes according to his whims, & then asks whether voters will find it “worth the hassle” to vote for him.

It would have been “get your fucking soldiers out of our cities.”
