I am upset and disheartened by the decision by @uofcalifornia.bsky.social to discontinue this program, which helped recruit many brilliant faculty members to the University of CA system.
UC to Stop Funding Systemwide Postdoc Program

Established in 1984 to encourage women and minority Ph.D.s to pursue academia, the program has attracted right-wing criticism for prioritizing diverse candidates. https://bit.ly/3WFBSpb

New data: CBPP analyzed USDA’s contingency fund spending plan & found it is only going to release 2/3 of the funding they committed to in court filings, cutting families’ SNAP benefits far more than necessary, violating USDA’s own regulations & shortchanging millions of families.

Huge.

Trump just blamed Republican election losses on the shutdown.

I heart snarky subtweets in research papers: "The fact that η2p is often reported for One-Way ANOVAs... indicates that researchers are either very passionate about unnecessary subscript letters, or rely too much on the effect sizes as they are provided by statistical software packages."

In an unprecedented move, the US National Institutes of Health has begun mass terminations of research grants that fund active scientific projects because they no longer meet “agency priorities”.

Yup, now apply this logic to The Department of Education (ED).
From a colleague who worked for for USAID until he was abruptly fired last week. As he says, courts take time. If you shatter things with a hammer it doesn’t matter if the courts eventually rule in your favor. You destroy lives—of government workers and of millions of poor people around the world.

Hi that was a coup last night in case no one mentioned that to you. The executive branch seized the power of the purse the Constitution gave to Congress, which is a pretty authoritarian / illegal consolidation of powers move. Time to go yell at your reps, the media, etc.

I'm a former OMB official and this is absolutely true.

And let's also not forget that these illegal actions have direct, harmful consequences for actual people. New moms won't get help feeding their infants. Small businesses won't make payroll. People could lose their jobs, their homes.
There is simply no plausible argument that the president has the constitutional authority to refuse to spend appropriated funds because he doesn’t like how the money is being spent.

The legality of policy impoundments is just not a close question.

And further, those same people are dead silent about racism, sexism, or classism in every single context.
