It's that horrible damp cold in Te Whanganui-a-Tara today, the graveyard clamminess that seeps into your bones, that creeps under your clothes, the feeling of mould edging its way, silently, into your lungs, the wooden shack miasma that never quite seems to dry out

People love archaeology, but they perceive it as a luxury. It's always been a bizarre contradiction, the awareness of the fundamental importance of history whilst not grasping how inherent archaeology is to that understanding. Archaeology is relentlessly undervalued within public investment.
New report on how people engage with archaeology is out - Trowel and Error: A Public User Needs Survey. Lots to digest but key conclusions are: 1) archaeologists risk undervaluing and hiding ourselves, our practices and the role we play in society... www.archaeologyuk.org/our-work/tro...

Did Hipkins basically say "we can't commit to pay equity", or did he basically say "we don't know how much the commitment to pay equity will cost so i can't give you a number"? Because one is acceptable to me (if milquetoast) and one is not #nzpol

This Bill could invalidate the votes of enough people to swing the next election in favour of the current government for no reason other than that they failed to fill out the correct piece of paper by the "proper" time (as defined by the people who benefit from the rule change).
Justice Committee recommends passing Electoral Amendment Bill with some amendments
The bill would prevent same-day enrolments, ban prisoners from voting, and tighten up the rules around treating.

And if they, somehow, win and then proceed to do fuck all to counteract the shitshow NACTFirst have implemented, they'll definitely lose the following election (and decimate voting numbers)
If Labour go into the election led by this mealy mouthed right wing man they will lose

Labour must show genuine leadership to win votes

"The Ministry of Justice found 80.2 percent of submitters opposed the bill, with 0.5 percent supporting it."

In a shock move, NACTFirst heavy committee approves law that favours them even though voters hate it.

Govt committee that has 6 NACTFirst members and 5 opposition parties members votes in favour of law that advantages NACTFirst despite vast majority of public submissions being against it.

They aren't even subtle

Whenever NZers have an option to say publicly that they don't believe in what this government is doing to Māori, there are more on the side of right than the side of wrong
- more people voted for Māori wards than against them
- more schools decided to give effect to Te Tiriti than did not

@thetrawl.bsky.social talking about rich men who do quiet good - George Michael and Prince. Both gave loads to people and organisations, without any fuss, and it only became known after they died.

Good blokes.

Could Stanford make it any clearer that National don't want kids to learn critical thinking or how the subjects they learn actually function in human society?

National education = rote learning for drone workers

Actual education = learning skills and how to use them

Trump, Hegseth etc love putting other people in danger without a care. They, clearly, consider anyone who isn't them to be less than human/expendable.

Bastards.
"The soldiers had been on a high-visibility patrol near the corner of 17th and I streets, an area where many office workers mill around at lunchtime."

Yep. The opportunity for this attack would not have existed but for Trump's deployment.
