This unwelcome icon has just showed up in my MS Word; it doesn't do anything, because I have Copilot disabled six ways to Sunday, but I can't get rid of it and it's annoying as hell. Other than telling me to get Linux (this is a university computer), does anyone know how to get rid of this crap?

Absolutely co-sign...this is one of the reasons I'm proud to be in the humanities.
When students get to college they generally don’t know what college is and that’s an incredible pedagogical opportunity. My freshman comp class did Morrison, Pope, Dickinson, Shakespeare, and Johnny Cash all swirled together in a frenzy of discovery. Education is what we make it.

Hands up if you've never used Chat GPT ✋
(I feel like Dozer and Tank in The Matrix right now - at first I didn't use it because, rather ironically, I'm lazy and stubborn (peak Taurus energy there) - literally no, don't make me use the new thing I don't wanna. Now I'm glad I didn't 😅)

Probably a good way to tell right now if the job you’re applying for is run by absolute dumbfucks is to ask if they’re using AI.

A clear explanation of the efforts of a Supreme Court Justice to try to mitigate the impacts of an awful person, and a reminder that it's helpful to learn the details about something before leaping in with a half-formed opinion.
If you’re trying to catch up on what went down with #SNAP late last night at #SCOTUS, here’s my attempt to read the breadcrumbs on the “administrative stay” issued by Justice Jackson—and why a justice so critical of the Court’s grants of emergency relief to Trump still granted temporary relief here:
190. SNAP WTF?
A very quick explainer on why Justice Jackson issued an "administrative stay" in the SNAP case late on Friday night, and on what's likely to happen next

This story is completely made up, but even if it's true, it's amazing how often some people don't learn the basic lesson that if everyone around you is perpetually a problem...the problem may not actually be them.

LOL, okay, Tiger Beat on the Politico. To be clear: a nine point win and over fifty percent in a three way race is not a "slim majority," and the city isn't "divided" unless you give a damn about Staten Island. Mamdani kicked ass, and you're going to have to find some new lines to cut and paste.

The mayor-elect barely cleared 50 percent of the vote in a race that stoked deep divisions along religious and class lines.

Top Ten People To Never Listen To About Anything: Ross Douthat
The New York Times quickly sending out Douthat to argue that Mamdani’s victory doesn’t really matter is so predictable it borders on self-parody.
Remember, folks: Every time the Right wins an election, it’s an undeniable expression of the will of the people. If a lefty wins, it’s just a blip.

Here's another bit of conventional wisdom Zohran completely blew away: His speech was at well above a 10th-grade level. It was complex, erudite, punctuated by deep and fluent references. You don't have to condescend to voters with baby talk! Part of re-establishing norms is speaking like an adult.

Historically, DMs don't get flipped because they have all the character sheets, so that Iowa result is an even bigger deal than it seems.
Every race. It’s basically been every race.
Governors. Mayors. Long-held GOP dog-catchers. School boards. Water boards. Flipped a dungeon master in a rural Iowa D&D club. State senators. State reps. A janitor in Duluth. State justices. Three GOP Uber drivers.
Just everything.

He also needs to make sure the B.O.E. actually supports those teachers, along with paying them a living wage and functional health benefits, but yes, this is a good start.
Mamdani says in his victory speech, “we will hire thousands of teachers.”
This, and not the proprietary chatbot classroom, is the future of education.
