I hate how every nation is living down to its stereotype because I’m trained to look for complexity in things, yet the USA is run by a caricature of crony capitalism that Soviet propaganda would consider too unsubtle, Russia is run by a Bond villain, the UK is speedrunning Children of Men, etc.

A fun bit in all of this is stuff like the railway nationalisation. We spent *years* with people pointing to this as Left Populism in action, it became a key litmus test for both left and right, and now there is a Labour government doing it and literally nobody gives a shit

I work in Grant management: this would functionally end science as we understand it in the US
This has gotten surprisingly little attention — it's not even on the front page of @science.org right now — but it's really hard to describe what the SAFE Research Act would do to US science and scientists without sounding insane

If you don't already agree that there's a moral panic over transgender care, just read the New York Times' articles on hormone therapy for cis people and compare them to their hit pieces on the hormone therapy for trans people.
