Okay, here's some of what we've learned thanks to support from my lab's current NSF project — and there's a more to come, because of course analysis and the publishing process will carry on past the end of the funding ... 🧵
Post the amazing science things you have done with federal funding.

Just now: The plaintiffs who were arguing that Utah GOP's congressional map is illegal won in court.

The judge orders one of the two maps submitted by the plaintiffs ('map 1') be used.

The ruling, if it stands, guarantees that Democrats will pick up a congressional seat in Utah next year.

The CFPB was created. The Trump administration is seeking to eliminate it, despite the fact that Congress has passed no law enabling it to do so.

Seattle's Mamdani is winning by an absurdly small margin over our incumbent mayor, who once pulled a gun on a pregnant woman in a parking lot.

In the century leading up to 1975, nearly 6000 freighters went down in the Great Lakes.

The Edmund Fitzgerald was the last.

The last. In 50 years, not a single commercial freighter has been lost in the Great Lakes.

Why?

It's NOAA. Of course it's NOAA.

SEATTLE!!!

We’ve now taken the lead by 91 votes! 🤯 This thing is certainly not over! Over 1,000 ballots have been challenged, so if you haven’t tracked your ballot yet get on it! Our trusty volunteers have been working hard to "cure" ballots so they count! We're so close!

Eight months ago, Katie Wilson declared her intention to run and all the conventional powers-that-be said she didn't stand a chance of winning.

Remember that we don't always know what is possible.
Wilson now leads in the Seattle mayoral race by 91 votes. Prior to today, Harrell had been leading by 4,300 votes, but this latest vote batch netted Wilson 4,391 votes.

Wilson needed about 54.6 percent of the rest of the votes outstanding and got 55.6 percent of this latest batch, with about 6,000 ballots still out there (and not counting the 2,000 or so that have been challenged due to signature discrepancies, etc.)

<you, smart> the virus must be perfectly adapted to cause a pandemic

<evolution, dumb> eh, good enough
"SARS-CoV-2 is too well-adapted to humans [hence, insert your favorite conspiracy theory]".

That was never right because, for one, SARS-CoV-2 is a pandemic virus so it necessarily had to be "well-adapted".

Now, a new study shows the same is true for BANAL-236 - a related virus isolated from bats.

It's amazing that neither Schumer nor any of the eight turncoats can summon this rhetorical energy.
Do I trust them? No. That’s why I voted no. But they are in a terrible position, and we can use the next few weeks to turn the pressure up even further.
