"We grant people different rights based on their genetic heritage and on which scrap of land they happened to be born on. That’s mad, isn’t it?"

I just think, when debating immigration and so on, that we should try not to lose sight of the fact that "nationality" is a made up thing.
Why does nationality matter, anyway?
Deciding someone's legal rights based on a nebulous combination of birthplace and parentage is a bit weird

Farage can now be easily boxed in to a corner where his only ‘defence’ becomes: “Yes I spouted Kremlin propaganda & Putin worship but, unlike Nathan Gill, I didn’t need bribes to do it.”
It is, once again, a question of whether interviewers have the temerity to shut down his whining obfuscations.

Was #Mamdani *summonsed* to the WH or did he *demand* an audience, I wonder? Cos it would be great if it was the latter, waving his victory in the face of the epitome of the type of person who his voters were voting against :)

Rather it's been brewing at least since Lloyd-George in 1922 abandoned all thought of implementing the #landtax!

@centerforcities.bsky.social Hello...great to see this report. As a simple proxy for very detailed analysis of what's where I use this: www.tomforth.co.uk/circlepopula... Turns out, for instance, that beautiful Seville has 3 times the population (and so density, more or less) as Oxford, say.

"Management", perhaps especially where there are no shareholders to answer to, like universities, should be selected by and primarily accountable to the teams they are going to lead, not recruited/imposed by even more remote levels of management.

Received an extraordinary letter from the British Red Cross today (see image) about the domestic policy of a British Labour government. I'll bet they didn't foresee having to write this. It appears we have to go back as far as Ken Clarke or Roy Jenkins to find a decent liberal Home Secretary.

Land value tax would solve this.
Building housing is a left issue.
Taxing housing to build housing means less housing.
Less housing means more pressure on your housing market and higher rents.
Build the housing. And don’t let NIMBYs stop or slow us downs
@wilsonforseattle.bsky.social
1. Get rid of min. parking requirements
2. Temporarily end MHA to spur building for 3 yrs
3. Get rid of design review temporarily for 3 yrs
4. Don’t allow NIMBYs in wealthy areas to slow down development; sue them every time as a deterrent for future efforts

Shabana Mahmood casually saying they're gonna take migrant's jewellery off them has got me thinking about that scene in Schindler's List where the Jewish family wrap family heirlooms in bread and swallow them.

What the fuck are we?

People don't own land. It was here a billion years before you, it will be here a billion years after you're gone, you don't own it. Land is for everyone.

That's enough. We've had enough people indulging in the "thrill of a little conservatism", as a treat. Of considering reactionary thought to be a salacious and taboo in a world descending into reactionary mania.

Right yes I've seen the Waitrose ad now and the things that nobody told me are that a) this is our old local pub b) this is outside our old flat, so thank you, nothing says Christmas like being extremely bloody homesick (house is also Rebecca's childhood home in Ted Lasso)

A thousand times this! People simply do not grasp in many cases the proportion of things they get so excited about! Not just economy of course. But certainly especially economy.
NYT owes us a front-page apology. Biden may have been tone-deaf in his comments on the economy. That is HUGELY different from Trump telling outright lies cepr.net/publications...
Being Tone Deaf Is Not the Same as Telling Outright Lies: That Should be Obvious
Media are not doing a good job explaining the ways that Trump lies about the economy.

Went to the ballet last night at the New Theatre Oxford to see the London City Ballet dance: londoncityballet.com/production/m...

Absolutely amazing what ten dancers a sound and lighting person can do on tour like that. Sadly there are only two venues left in the UK tour - York and ROH.

I get that it must be a difficult decision - shutdown means millions are furloughed, usually without pay, and many services go undelivered. But government does not exist for its employees, but for the people it serves, so you must hold out for the benefits they need to survive. #shutdown #cavein
