Roll up, roll up, as I make the bone-crushing TBR pile DISAPPEAR!

Here is a thread of my mountain of books!
Join me as I read through them & absolutely under no circumstances buy more!

What's first, I hear you ask?
I'll be adding the first book soon, because I'm going to cheat and begin in 2025.
In 2026, I want to get through my TBR.
There are at least 85 books on it! 😅 (I didn't count library or ebooks)

Most are TOMBS rather than quick reads. So far my plan is:
- prioritise borrowed books, review copies & world issues
- read a short book every 3 books
- see if I can audiobook any
Help? 😂
Rewatching Galavant tonight.

More comedy shows should be musicals.

Every Friday, we meet a member of the BFS and peer deep into their soul (or, at least, a form they filled out). Here's Belarus-born, Sheffield-based sci-fi writer Valeriya Salt, who finds inspiration for her Earth-bound SF in gardens and parks.

Primary school teachers - I'm doing an illustration of a year five classroom and there needs to be a box of STUFF on the floor. What kind of stuff would that be? Craft materials? iPads? A globe? Please advise.

I feel this IN MY BONES.
I think one of the hardest things about being a career writer in traditional publishing is that writing attracts the neurodivergent brain while the variable reinforcement schedule punishes it. We are all the rat at the water bottle, waiting for the hit of cocaine. You get one win, and you need MORE.

Imagine if I'd written someone's favourite book of the year 🥹🫶

(The book is Cacoethes, a bisexual sugar baby coming-of-age novel. It's all about bad decisions, it's my debut, and it took ten years to bring into the world. Would you like to read it?

Happy Friday from the part of November where the sun sets at 4pm and everything feels like the start of a dark, unhinged thriller.
(Which, conveniently, is exactly my favourite setting…)

I’m currently reading this. It’s fantastic (in both senses) so far! And the war hasn’t even started yet. I can’t wait to see where it goes!
Witches, war, & espionage collide in 1940s Cambridge.

As the partner of an immigrant, this is very close to my heart. The pathways into this country have always been inhumane, but these proposed changes make them more so, relying on subjective, vague, and - frankly - Victorian notions such as 'character'. If you've got a minute, could you have a go?
For those of you in the UK, especially if you are a UK citizen, can you please take part in the consultation on changes to Indefinite Leave to Remain (Settlement) that were just proposed by the UK government. We need as many people as possible to reject these proposals. www.gov.uk/government/c...

A moment that radicalized me. My son is 10 and we're talking about how not everyone loves their job and he says: "But you can do other things, right? How often do you have to work?" I tell him most get 3 w off/year and he gasps. "People only do what they want 3 weeks a year, their whole life?" 2/3

Guys, buying from small publishers and indie bookshops, instead of Amazon is the best way to support publishers, booksellers and authors and to keep small presses alive 👇
Please buy, too, from my lovely publisher @flyonthewallpress.bsky.social
Update: we have sold a total of eight books this month. "The books go to their readers, one by one, quickly, slowly, halfway around the world or halfway across the city. There is no supply chain, only the postal network, irregular events, direct sales to bookshops, and local distribution."
It may well be the case that small, independent presses are the lifeblood of literature, and a vital feature of our cultural landscape, providing an essential service in a complex ecosystem, like wrasses or shrimps. What is undeniably the case is that we have sold a total of five books this month.

We really enjoyed this - a lot like if Calvin of 'Calvin and Hobbes' fame was in a fantasy book.
Enjoyed reading Unfairies, the graphic novel by Huw Aaron. It’s full of reckless humour as you follow the mischievous Pip on his madcap adventures.

I've got the corner of the nub of the grain of an idea about something and before I go too far down a road, I'd massively appreciate responses to 5 teeny questions from fellow academic types who have ever done (or claimed to do) thematic analysis.

Grateful for reposts.

Is all analysis just about the vibes?
I've got a grain of an idea for a slow burn bit of research around how academics do analysis versus how they write about having done research. Right now, it really is just a tiny grain, a speck, a fle...

This is good advice, and is why - at the moment - I'm writing heavy tropey fanfiction-esque fluff. It is what makes my heart happy and it's what I want to read.
Unsolicited writing advice, no. 230:
Be honest. Write what you care about. Give of yourself. If you try to hold back, you'll fail to connect with your readers. (And yes, it feels scary, being vulnerable. Do it anyway.)
