Might be time to light a fire tbh. There should be a hill and a castle beyond that line of trees.

Aparently my coping mechanism is to abandon my laptop and make tiny, pointless notebooks out of household detritus. This is helpful to know.

(Yes, my household detritus includes random scraps of leather and 40 yr old watercolour paper).

Convincing you to read my novel by the first sentence! Show me yours if you want.

When the Giants Passed Through - coming next year 👀

I'm currently looking for work, no longer studying, and because I'm now deaf in one ear and audiology wait times are 115 weeks in Aberdeenshire, I'm kind of afraid to go out alone.

So I thought: I'll just replay the Mass Effect trilogy. I love those games.

I'm now starting ME:2 and have rememebred

HAHAHA - TOME not TOMB.

Maybe I was thinking of this?

And last - for now - is @jacksonjamie.bsky.social 's Adventures in LovE - another @northodoxpress.bsky.social book.

I'm currently reviewing this in detail on app.thestorygraph.com/profile/fran... but basically, this book is like water - dive in and let the prose wash over you. Can't praise enough.

Another @northodoxpress.bsky.social book - Green Laughing by Andrew Hall.

I read this on a recent trip and I *made noises in public* because certain parts impacted me so much.

Even if you're not normally a Sci-fi person, there's something here for you. Think Orbital, but better.

A cheeky little folk horror story from @renardpress.com:

Her Winter Song by Anna Vaught.

This one is a real treat for the festive season - think Ira Levin unsettling, but with gorgeous art, and a really nicely presented book. Like an A24 film on paper.

Next!
Hit Points Red: An anthology of video game poetry by Matthew Haigh and Aaron Kent (and many, many others!)

This book from @brokensleepbooks.bsky.social is a great gift for nostalgic gamers. I got so much out of this but the Shenmue poem in particular hit home.

It also comes in blue.
November 6, 2025 at 11:49 AM
Another @northodoxpress.bsky.social offering. Claire Morris is Completely Lost by Kristina Thornton.

This one is a master-class for all aspiring writers in how to create and subvert a status quo within the first chapter. I was hooked from the offset and didn't put it down.
November 6, 2025 at 11:49 AM
Another one from @longbarrowpress.bsky.social - this time To the End of the Land by Martin Heslop, Helen Tookey.

What a mood this one is. Another amazing poetry collection. It feels like the west coast - of Denmark, of Scotland, of wild and unnamed places... 1000/10
November 6, 2025 at 11:49 AM
Next is BLOODSONGS by @vavapoetry.bsky.social published by @tapsalteerie.bsky.social

This one floored me. As an Aberdeenshire kid it felt like coming home.

Don't be put off by the Doric. It's part of what makes this amazing & you'll understand more than you fear even if you're not from the shire.
November 6, 2025 at 11:49 AM
We've got our first @northodoxpress.bsky.social book now - the incredible Cottonopolis by @sflayzell.bsky.social

I read this months ago and I *still* find myself thinking about it.

Queer, working-class, northern historical fiction for young adults. Chef's kiss - no notes.
November 6, 2025 at 11:49 AM
Next we have
My Car Plays Tapes by John Osborne, published by @brokensleepbooks.bsky.social

Perfect for folk in their late 30s/early 40s who had a car that played tapes when everyone else had CDs. i.e. me. I feel like I'm the whole target demographic. I LOVED this so much.

Followed swiftly by...
Hemisphere, also by @petegreensolo.com and @longbarrowpress.bsky.social

This would pair so, so well with The Worst Journey In The World, or is ideal for any explorer - of both the real and armchair variety.
November 6, 2025 at 11:49 AM
Next up!

Sheffield Almanac by @petegreensolo.com and published by @longbarrowpress.bsky.social

Such a vivd snapshot of time and place! Perfect for poetry fans!

Next!
The Worst Journey in the World #1 by Sarah Airriess (who I couldn't find on Bluesky), published by @indienovella.bsky.social

The research that went into this!! 👀

Antarctic adventure graphic novel, with art and text based on contemporary diaries. Seriously stunning.
November 6, 2025 at 11:49 AM
First up!
The Chessmen Thief by Barbara Henderson (@scattyscribbler.bsky.social) from Pokey Hat, who I can't seem to find on Bluesky.

It's got vikings, stonking prose, and the Lewis chess set - what more could you ask for?
November 6, 2025 at 11:49 AM
I hope you're all carving neeps as tradition dictates.

After a night in the apple press, this is what two boxes of apples looks like. It's amazing how compact they can become!
October 29, 2025 at 9:29 AM
There's a lot going on at the moment, and sometimes it's overwhelming. I'm not saying it fixes anything, but making myself rainbow dinosaur and duck underwear has definitely helped my mood.
October 9, 2025 at 9:26 PM
Just managed to sneak this in before Eldest took it back to the library - what an absolute stonker of a graphic novel. The music references are *gold* as are the feelings of being a teenage outcast. 100/10, no notes.

Went for a lovely walk after the storm. Found a cool tree and an amazing quantity of mushrooms! Lots of field mushrooms, some penny buns, and some scarletina boletes.

We had some field mushrooms in a salad and the rest in a pearl barley risotto. The boletes are in the dehydrator.

This world! 😍🥹💗🥰
