Everything needed to understand Britain rn is contained within. Carer doing the hardest job in the country. Needs to work 60 hours a week. Can’t sleep because their autistic child also needs care. Forced to forfeit the help they need to try and avoid it costing them twice as many visa renewals.

So the Home Office, which is responsible for the welfare of asylum seekers & for determining their claims, has decided to call them “illegal migrants” & tell everyone it’s “furious” about them being here, but I’m sure this is fine and not a symptom of a culture of disbelief & gratuitous cruelty

We’ve mapped the mansion tax.

You can see who's paying - which constituency, which postcode - and how many "mansions" are near you.

I was increasingly on edge this whole year as we got closer to when I could apply for ILR, to the point that I was basically asked to leave work early the week i was anticipating a response because of how visibly anxious and distressed I was.

If my wait was extended, I would have been destroyed.
At least 160,000 people have been granted refugee status over the past five years. It now seems they are intended to be caught by the Government’s plans to make refugees wait up to 20 years for settlement - even for those just months away from ILR

You don’t have to be perfect to do better. But doing anything at all really means a lot. It shows disabled people that you care about our lives. That you see us as worth protecting. And it means the world.

If you still try to isolate or protect others when you are sick, THANK YOU.
If you still test for COVID when you have any symptoms, THANK YOU.

If you invented a robot that sometimes cleaned my house really well & quickly & saved me lots of work—but *often* just moved things around without really cleaning—& *sometimes* added germs *to* the surfaces—such that just to be safe, I always had to clean after it

I don’t think I’d buy that robot

Shabana Mahmood casually saying they're gonna take migrant's jewellery off them has got me thinking about that scene in Schindler's List where the Jewish family wrap family heirlooms in bread and swallow them.

What the fuck are we?

We were not asylum seekers, but nearly 50 years on, my mum still wistfully talks of the jewellery she had to sell to pay for the plane tickets that got us here.

Aside from this policy being unconscionable, it does make me wonder how many asylum seekers will have any such belongings to confiscate.
The Sun has been told Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood will on Monday propose confiscating jewellery, watches, necklaces from asylum seekers to meet asylum costs

This reflects the most controversial aspect of the Danish scheme - the Jewellery Law. The toughest Labour MPs thought this was OTT

Holy shit. This is a game changer if true. The potential of antibiotic resistant diseases is terrifying
British and Australian chemists have discovered a powerful new antibiotic called pre-methylenomycin C lactone, hiding in a well-known soil bacterium. This molecule kills drug-resistant bacteria without triggering resistance. buff.ly/YlXaONo

Tonight in d&d a dead wizard on the back of an ancient white dragon tried to offensively planeshift one of the party to the plane of ice, where they would have been trapped with no way back. Very luckily they made their saving throw. We may be a bit fucked 🙃

My family used to have a contest at this time of year where we all chose a leaf from our garden tree and the person whose leaf remained on the tree longest was the winner. One year we discovered Mum had snuck out and sellotaped her leaf to the tree, and I still have so much respect for that.

To be really clear, Sussex ICB threatened, in writing, to close a Brighton GP practice serving 25,000 patients, purely to bully them into passing over child records. The GP did not want to pass on these records, because they understood the acute risk (& reality) of harm to trans adolescents.
