Because he is, in effect, a nullity, because there's nothing to him, because he is transparent, it follows that anyone who sees content, sees depth, is capable of being surprised, is *projecting*.

This is why Trump is useful & somewhat fascinating: he is a blank canvas upon which people project.

i don't think this is even a real statistical anomaly anymore. it seems like there's someone in the crowd at every mass shooting who has been through it before. this doesn't have to be our shared cultural experience.

"Make the Court fear the people" is exactly the right way to frame this. That's the slogan, y'all.
The Supreme Court is completely compromised with right-wing hacks who have been groomed by billionaires and white Christian nationalists.

It's time for fighters to emerge and embrace accountability, reform and EXPANDING THE COURT.

a big runoff last night, in New Orleans:

Calvin Duncan was exonerated after spending *28 years* in prison; he tried to get his own case records from the New Orleans city clerk—but the office dragged its feet.

So Duncan ran to become city clerk himself, and yesterday ousted the incumbent.

Yep. Some go into journalism to have access to power, to be power's handmaiden & PR. Others go into journalism to question & illuminate the operation of power & how some norms/systems hurt the powerless. Wolff just 1 of many examples showing--again--the former is very common& usu far more lucrative.
Aside from every other repulsive thing about these Epstein emails, they offer direct confirmation of Michael Wolff as one of the sketchiest creeps in a teeming universe of gross behavior

A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

But she is also a warning to her generation: Invest in what comes after you and graciously step aside before your legacy is in danger.
Nancy Pelosi will not seek reelection.

a great point. it sometimes gets forgotten that pelosi took the keys away after J6. it was an extra-constitutional action in a time of extreme crisis, but she knew there was no choice. she led when the men could not. stay mad, douthat
And she understood exactly what Trump was trying on Jan 6. Someone else in her place that day and he might have succeeded in his coup attempt.

she was a generational political talent. i owe her my life thanks to her getting the ACA passed. she’s led some really bad votes too, but i still think our country is a much better place in a lot of different ways, largely thanks to her leadership and ceiling breaking
I’ve said it many times — Pelosi wasn’t that great at the PR aspects of the job but where it really mattered, handling a fractious caucus and getting votes with thin margins, no one was better

I have my various beefs with Pelosi, but this is something to always keep in mind about her legacy. The right wouldn’t hate her so much if she wasn’t doing some real good, even if she has her own flaws.
Putting aside Pelosi the speaker/leader for a second: Pelosi was one of the most queer friendly politicians in american history. When gay politicians in the 80s refused to talk about AIDS, Pelosi did. When no gay elected official would even talk about the trans community or trans rights....
