Cached UK/IE Kindle giveaway: 5 copies of The Martian by Andy Weir, which I have and have read and have enjoyed a lot. I also really liked the movie; I think it was a very good adaptation. You MUST have an amazon.co.uk account to claim one!

A #Christmas story from the French supermarket chain Intermarché. The message (as this isn't English-subtitled): "Try eating some vegetables." Check out the fabulous animation! www.youtube.com/watch?v=Na9V...

GANDALF: Can you see anything?

FRODO: There's nothing…Wait. There are markings. It's some form of Elvish. I can't read it.

GANDALF: There are few who can. The language is that of Mordor, which I will not utter here. In the common tongue it says, "Light the lamp, not the rat."

When you drift through some unheralded point in your 40s, you start accumulating actuarial risks.

The odds of illness, heart attack, or the chances losing of a parent go up.

But there is another risk- particularly acute for men.

There is a risk you will lose your capacity for joy.

When I volunteered at the Austin Nature & Science Center 300 years ago, this was phrased to me as "their heads are full of optic nerves & murder. There's no room for anything else."
Me to same owl handler: "Owls are super wise, right? They read loads of highbrow Russian literature and stuff, don't they?"

Owl handler: "No, they actually have very tiny brains, due to the hugeness of their eyes. In reality they are one of the thickest animals you could ever meet."

Very sad that I felt I had no choice but to resign from The Infinite Monkey Cage - a victory for the transphobes and other bigots - I did it because so much of the media has chosen to believe the kind and empathetic people are a fiction - they are real and so often unrepresented.

5) AI, which is good at bullshit, may thrive because we have made a society run on bullshit. But in the end I cannot believe we will all become nothing but consumers. People MAKE. An not in the Randian "makers and takers" sense, in the yearning, stretching toward the infinite sense.

my great-grandparents arrived in the UK in the 1890s with nothing.
they sold pickles from the front room window, took in laundry, worked as tailors.
their children were nurses, teachers, salesmen.
their grandchildren were professors, designers, opticians, doctors, magistrates, entrepreneurs.
This is so disgusting.

I’ve been talking to people about masculinity & the manosphere bros & trying to figure out how to say what I think, & then she comes along & puts it perfectly.

You can’t skeet better than this.
They don't want traditional masculine virtues, which is something they give; they want traditional masculine rents, which is something they get.

Y'all the latest episode of the #Kilauea #eruption just went CRAZY. It looks like pressure built up enough to explode out the ground around the two existing vents (first few seconds), leading to a massive surge in lava fountaining.🌋🤯

The Express is furious about this because the moment you show those who repeat anti-immigration rhetoric the real human stories their narrative collapses.

The “immigrants” are people. Our friends, colleagues and family.

And it’s this nation of neighbours that is what makes Britain great.

I didnt realize it wasnt obvious until a couple DMs, but folks who need mutual aid to survive ask for gift cards or wishlist items bc:

- low chance of affecting benefits negatively
- can get wants & needs without pulling from desperate survival fund
- alleviates spending while struggling guilt
