What is common knowledge in your field but shocks outsiders?

A lot of of the IT in financial institutions consists of enterprise solutions built on top of mainframes in place since the 1960s, that are difficult to phase out and replace due to most people with the relevant skills having retired.
What is common knowledge in your field but shocks outsiders?

The vast majority of software products contain known vulnerabilities, waiting for threat actors to exploit them.

Also: almost all proprietary software depends on open-source components (many of which people maintain as a hobby).

Most decisions in EU or international minister / prime minister meetings are pre-negotiated, with only little actual negotiations taking place at a Council meeting.

Yes. And this article does not even mention that the same referendum includes ballots on the protection of vulnerable workers/compensation for illegitimate firing.

If you call yourself progressive and want to vote on these things, this may be the vote in a generation
Really interesting article in the @financialtimes.com about the Italian nationality referendum.

It has profound implications for its rapidly ageing society, where nearly a quarter of the population is over 65 and just 12 per cent below the age of 14.

It's probably just a coincidence that 'Escape from Alcatraz' aired multiple times on a local South Florida station just as our TV-obsessed president was staying at Mar-a-Lago and suddenly decided that the prison needed to be reopened.

The 1979 film starring Clint Eastwood about the daring 1962 escape attempt aired on the local PBS channel just six hours before the president made his demand that the prison be reopened

Some Pentagon officials have even questioned an unspecified ally about why it continues sending military aid to Ukraine, the Economist reported.

I'd add to this excellent @dsmitheconomics.bsky.social piece that the way to hit Trump where it hurts (psychologically/politically) isn't a tariff war we can't win, but showing we/other advanced economies can globalise *without* the US.

Reposting this because there is way too much misinformation out there. US customers: purchases from UK Etsy sellers under $800 value, are NOT subject to the new tariffs. Nothing has changed. The price you paid last week is the same this week. Please pass this around. Livelihoods depend on facts.
It’s a crazy world when an artist has to write about tariffs, but here we are. Happily, it’s good news. As sales to the US account for the vast majority of my income, it’s hugely important for me to get this message out there, and I’d be very grateful if you could all share far and wide. Thank you.

We've now ended up with non-tariff barriers on our biggest trading partner and tariffs from our second biggest trading partner. I'm not sure 'benefit' is the word I'd use to describe that outcome.
Yup. It feels cruel to deny deluded Brexiters their tiny sliver of a ‘win’ but, on the other hand, fuck ‘em. Weakening a country *before* an attack like this is an act of obvious treachery. We would, by any measure, be better off *in* the the EU *with* the 20% basic tariff rate.
And the 25% on car parts from, inter alia, the UK is still in place, right? Or not?
