The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste
Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.

Okay, the crowd going nuts like someone just scored a touchdown at the Super Bowl all *through* the KDH performance is a hell of a thing to see hear/see:

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

At the moment, I’m regrettably not reading Edgar Allan Poe whilst having cappuccinos and croissants in a dimly-lit quaint café on a cobblestone street in Prague during a snowstorm, so no, I’m afraid your email did not “find me well.”

Just a friendly reminder as we go into the holidays:

Folks don't have to explain to you why they don't drink.

If you offer them a drink and they decline, don't ask them why. It's not your business.

Just offer them something without alcohol to drink instead. And move on.

It's much simpler than that. The Boy Scouts aren't maximally cruel to trans kids and so Republicans believe it should be destroyed.

Use your libraries, you pea brains. If you can't afford the book, guess what you paid taxes that pay for libraries. Use them.
I posted a buy link here to "A Magical Inheritance" a few days ago, and 24 of you immediately went to Anna's Archives and fucking stole it from me.

Yes, stole it.

I do not get paid for your download there because YOU ARE STEALING FROM ME.

A terrific thread about holiday happiness. Multifaceted - different parts will apply to different people - but I appreciate so much the acknowledgement that holidays can be stressful even when you LIKE your family. 🩷
Okay, so you cannot avoid a Thanksgiving event, and it’s not entirely under your control. You’re home from college, you live with your parents, your spouse isn’t ready to process how awful their natal family is. It happens. THERE ARE STRATEGIES YOU CAN EMPLOY TO YOUR BENEFIT.

I have loads - that's what happens when you don't have cable as a kid but do have VHS (& later DVDs). Some less commonly mentioned ones I've seen more than 6 times (that I can see on my DVD shelf from where I sit atm): Ever After, Saved!, Chocolat, Romeo + Juliet (Baz)
Name a film you've seen six times.

This is a really interesting article about a horrifying distortion of sign language happening in the UK, and which its creators are now trying to export to other countries and their sign languages

Learn actual sign languages from Deaf people, not from hearing people making their own weird versions!

You know how many foods, when allowed to sit in proper conditions for a few days, just become More? Soups become richer, curry becomes spicier, lasagna becomes more decadent?

Well, my mother, through sheer accident, has found the worst possible application of this effect.

Also PSA: this is THE circumstance where you SHOULD simply repeat what your female colleague just said and was dismissed
PSA dudes: if you genuinely want women to believe you when you claim to be “one of the good ones” you should probably be backing up your female colleagues when they ask a genuinely important question and get back “quiet piggy” in response

It would be pretty cool if we all collectively pledged to support indie bookshops whenever/however we could 💕

Depending on budget & accessibility, that could look like visiting them in person, leaving a review, amplifying their social posts, giving gift cards, divesting from mega retailers, etc.
