Light pollution is a relatively easy-to-address environmental problem.

I’ve tried talking about it through the lenses of human and wildlife wellbeing, plus preventing insect, bird, and bat fatalities.

Never got as much conversation as this post. Yet another reason to be grateful for the aurora ❤️
Lots of folks captioning aurora photos like "for a few minutes we didn't think about politics"

guess I'm built different, every time I'm out trying to see night sky stuff I frequently think about how much light pollution is entirely preventable with just a tiny bit of regulation

how did i go so long not knowing we were literally teaching people to read wrong. i knew something wasn't right but jesus christ www.apmreports.org/episode/2019...
How a flawed idea is teaching millions of kids to be poor readers
For decades, schools have taught children the strategies of struggling readers, using a theory about reading that cognitive scientists have repeatedly debunked. And many teachers and parents don't kno...

ever since I learned about three-cueing I've developed infinitely more patience for replies on social media. mfers literally do not know how to read. people are walking around conjuring random meanings into words they don't know, and they don't know a lot of words. it's crazy

The 30 Rock episode with “how do you do, fellow kids?” is closer to the release of Windows 98 than it is to today.
I made a “how do you do, fellow kids?” joke to someone in their mid 20s who, it turns out, was too young to have heard of that meme.

So “how do you do, fellow kids?” is now an example of “how do you do, fellow kids?”

40 years ago we’d have congressional hearings falsely accusing metal bands of putting backwards messages in their songs that told kids to kill themselves & now we have a planet-killing chatbot that’s all like “bet you won’t commit suicide chickenshit bitch” & the government is like here’s $5 billion

wow, if only there had been warning signs about his temperament before he was confirmed
Brett Kavanaugh's behavior during today's second oral arguments has been incredibly obnoxious and rude. He is so eager to kill a service member's lawsuit against a negligent government contractor that he keeps interrupting other justices, raising his voice, and getting emotional. Weird and erratic.

this is such a great encapsulation of why this race feels existential even to people outside NYC. Cuomo as the final boss of everything wrong with the current Democratic Party, Mamdani happily grabbing the third rails everyone’s told are too dangerous to touch (trans people, Muslims, socialism)
It's uncanny how Cuomo has been laser-focused at appealing to the absolute worst qualities in people - their insularity, their tribalism, and now their fear. A campaign monumental in its cynicism, a colossal bet by this man and his billionaire backers that people are basically bad.
This isn't a closing election argument, it's Vidkun Quisling explaining why surrender is better than resistance.

Breaking character: This is a good thread. One my fixations is that Dems blow money on ads rather than building political infrastructure. My theory is they do this because the data tells them too just like the data told Robert McNamara to destroy Ford by cutting R&D to the bone.
Republicans have studied all of the Democratic ecosystem's ideas and strategies. They've directly copied every major left institution and then honed their own ideas in key ways:

1) Republicans use their money efficiently. They build institutions rather than rent them.

This gets at the core problem the Democrats have right now: Consultants keep telling them to focus on ‘kitchen table issues’ but they don’t have an inspiring kitchen table agenda! ‘Expanding drug price negotiation’ is technocratic and taxing the wealthy is something they refuse to deliver on.
Okay, let's get into the text...

Here are their bullet point recommendations: Talk about the economy! Don't talk about immigrants or climate or "social issues!" Criticize the ultra-wealthy, but in a very-not-socialist sort of way!

This is... just popularism? Didn't we already do this?
