This is an exceptional essay which I think everyone could do with reading, critic or not. A reminder of how to appreciate art even if you don’t like it.
The paragraph about TV Tropes is spot on. I can't bear that approach to criticism where the main aim seems to be asserting superiority to the work. People who'll identify an influence and be like "Ah, rumbled!" episodes.ghost.io/art-criticis...

God, I love cycling in December. Sure? it’s cold, it’s muddy, the wind knows your name, and there’s only 2 and a bit hours of daylight, BUT the world has the soft grainy look of Super 8. Everywhere looks like a Sunday.

I never even made it that far. Once it hit me that they’d killed off Watson’s wife because she’d turned out to be Sherlock’s intellectual equal and physical superior, and the show couldn’t abide that, oh no, I was done. The misogyny was rank to begin with, but that was the breaking point for me.

The biggest pause in my life was when I spoke to somebody who'd worked with Palin on a book tour and I asked what he was like. The two seconds they took to answer felt like an eternity before they said "If anything, he's probably nicer than most people think."

That’s not malpractice, that’s doctors following the law.

The abortion ban is the problem and it killed Tierra Walker.

Her fetus died too.
