I love talking about my job as a public defender. But summarizing the work really highlights how capricious the system is.

Disabled people, aided by the Black Panthers, staged the longest sit-in in American history in 1987, winning 504 protections. Just 3 years later we orchestrated the capitol crawl, in which many wheelchair users crawled and pulled themselves up the steps of the capitol to win passage of the ADA.
Please don't leave disabled people behind in your revolution. Please do not see us as sacrifices for the greater good, or dead weight. Please see our lives as worth saving, too.

Trying not to be alarmist, but please make sure you have the number for a criminal defense attorney memorized. If you’re indigent, memorize the number for the public defender’s office and NEVER TALK TO COPS WITHOUT AN ATTORNEY PRESENT
We are probably about to see an explosion in police violence. Cops are mostly Trumpers and DJT has explicitly told them he wants them to be violent. Local prosecutors are notoriously subservient to cops. The DOJ has been a check on this (albeit insufficiently) but that check is about to evaporate.

I started my career change after the 2016 election. I signed up for the next LSAT that day.

It’s 8 years later, somehow, and I’m doing exactly what that me wanted to do, but thought he never could. It’s my small victory. I’m so lucky, and I hope I can just leave things a little better.

But I love my job, and it matters to me. I get to help people. I’m surrounded by people who want to make it better.

I’m privileged and safe, and I can use that for others. And I can do the next right thing.

there is no "type" of woman whose husband dies too young. there is no "type" of person who cries in our lobby after losing a child. there is no Other person who is Different from you, so Different that you are freed from your responsibility to care and love and protect them.
the most insidious thing that any politician or media or cruel, malicious stranger can convince you of is that there are people who are not people in the same way you are. and i want to bring them to my job and shake them and tell them look, look at this grief, tell me this person is not my people
the number one thing that my job has given me, that i wish i could forcibly give to everyone, is an understanding of the universality of grief and in turn the universality of humanity. there is no "type" of person i meet in a day, and once you understand that, there are no "types" of person at all
