“Words like ‘freedom,’ ‘justice,’ ‘democracy’ are not
common concepts; on the contrary, they are rare. People are not born knowing what these are. It takes enormous and, above all, individual effort to arrive at the respect for other people that these words imply.”

If your institution is subpoenaed for this, the proper answer is GFYS.

"Subpoena seeks contact information for employees who have filed complaints about discrimination based on Jewish faith, those who belong to Jewish clubs or groups on campus, [staff in] ... Jewish studies program."
If the government asks for a list of Jews in your organization, you have an absolute ethical obligation to refuse that request, regardless of who is asking or what they say it's for. They have no right to ask and you have no right to comply.

God, how badly I wish we’d had our own version of this story…
"Brazil’s former far-right president, Jair Bolsonaro, has been arrested at his villa in the capital, Brasília, amid suspicions he was poised to abscond to a foreign embassy to avoid going to prison for masterminding a military coup."

“Dividing the Western alliance has long been Russia’s top foreign policy goal, so for Moscow, an outcome that involves the U.S. getting Ukraine to surrender and the U.S. undermining NATO is a win-win.”
The deal states “NATO agrees not to station troops in Ukraine,” which means no tripwire guarding against another Russian invasion, reducing the deterrent value. No details of a security guarantee, but says the US “will receive compensation,” treating it more like a protection racket.

Me in @ms.now:
Trump’s plan for peace in Ukraine is a win-win for Russia
Opinion | Given the U.S. president's behavior toward Putin, it was unlikely the Trump administration would seriously pressure Moscow

“By talking directly to Russia without participation from Ukraine or its European backers, the Trump administration adopted Russia’s distorted frame of statecraft, as if Ukraine’s freedom is America’s to give away.”

“…as a notion, it is pretty simple: it’s a story of rich people using their wealth, prestige, and connections to hurt the vulnerable, then turning around and using the same to avoid consequences for their harm.”

Hmmm 🤔
We spent a year investigating billionaires for @washingtonpost.com.

We found: the wealthiest 100 Americans gave $1.1 billion to influence the 2024 elections — 140x more than they did in 2000. And almost all of that giving boosted Republicans.

This, my friends, is what a political witch hunt looks like.

The authoritarian state seeking to harass and intimidate those it considers to be its opponents. (Read: Researchers who care about facts. And reality.)
As my friend just said, “Getting the university to understand the threats not from russian cyberterrorists but rather federal investigations using subpoenas has been my main frustration.”

Because they’re putting spyware on all our computers at the moment. Which seems like fucking great timing.

It’s so weird — and such an embarrassing tell — that Trump repeatedly uses the phrase, “groceries… you know, it’s sort of an old-fashioned word, but…”

As if.

He is so out of touch with average people that he doesn’t realize that American families talk about “groceries,” all the time, every day.
