It’s part of a SciComm paper on the tools of storytelling I was lucky enough to get an early look at. I think it really sums up a lot of JC’s approach to art, science, belief, humanity and communication from the cave to the cosmos!

So much to unpack
A campfire splits the image in two. On one side, in a red cave, a shamanic leader tells a story to a circle of primitive human. On the cave wall we can see illustrations of animals. The circle of humans swings around the campfire and on the right, against the deep blue of the night sky, a scout leader points to the constellations.

I found one of my academic papers in here (from a previous life when I was a scientist), so I've added my name to the list. Clearly it's a US lawsuit, but you can still join from other countries. Let's hope there is similar legal progress for my artworks that were hoovered up 🤞

Why should I write better when a machine can do it for me? Because actually no one can do it for you, because your voice is unique among all the people on earth. Siri never petted a horse's neck. Alexa has never been ghosted by the captain of the football team. But you have lived, your heart is beating, you have suffered, and you have something important to say. It's a human's job, to use words, and whatever job you give to a machine, that part of your brain goes dark. Maybe it's worth it when it comes to remembering phone numbers and directions, but when that part of your brain that uses words goes dark, that's a vast area that's very close to your soul. Don't let some internet platform convince you that what you have to say and create isn't worthwhile. Words are the echo of your soul. Honing that echo matters.

A protein structure (6B68) that is rendered with dramatic moody lighting. Everything is black but the lights emitted the ligand atoms light up the close surroundings of those ligands. Proteins are shown with a semi-transparent surface and the atoms and cartoon of the protein are partially visible inside of the surface, lit up from the emitted light from the ligands. Everything that is not lit up by the ligands remains black as there is no other light in the scene.

That's a sprite, an elusive, high-altitude electrical discharge from a thundercloud photographed by NASA astronaut Nichole Ayers from the ISS earlier today.

With reported sightings going back more than a century, this phenomenon was first photographed in 1989.

Post to the subreddit r/AskHistorians: What was navigation like for vehicle drivers in the United States before the internet and GPS? Before GPS devices and smartphones/cellular internet networks were a thing (Garmin company was founded 1989), millions of Americans were already getting around driving without the use of those inventions. How did they navigate? Did everyone need stacks of maps? Were drivers frequently lost? Did everyone have to understand the interstate system and use intuition to guide them? How burdensome was driving before GPS? Did drivers pay people to calculate an optimal route for them?

Made this after a trip where I found myself staring at stained glass in old churches for way too long. Not sure it’s finished, but I needed to let it go for now.
