Back onto making some protein visualisations for fun - this is RCSB's Molecule of the Month, and I had a go at my own version. It's a TOC-TIC Translocon (all the cool kids are doing Toc-tic, right?) Made in #Blender and #MolecularNodes

Thanks to #VIZBI nudging me, I hosted an online chat, where I whizzed through my typical workflow using #MolecularNodes, #Blender and After Effects to make this image in ~40 minutes(!)

Thanks for giving me your time, and I hope you all found it useful

Managed to submit my #VIZBI conference poster on time, which is great if you like looking at pretty proteins. IT'S HAPPENING NEXT WEEK!!!

#VIZBI in-person registration closes tomorrow! I'm attending so please come and join me in Cambridge to learn all the best things to know about biological visualisation!!! There will be snacks too. Virtual registration still an option. I AM EXCITED

Today's #FebruArty theme is "magenta". This is an illustration we made for the University of Vienna, showing strings of entangled qubits. The journal article on Blind Quantum Computing (published in Science) can be viewed here:

Today's #FebruArty theme is "socks", so I made a SOX gene, which is a transcription factor that binds to the minor groove of DNA. Made in #Blender and #MolecularNodes

Today's #FebruArty is #SensoryArt's theme of "LOUD". Reposting this illustration we made of synaesthesia, which is a neurological condition that causes crossovers between senses, such as seeing a colour when you hear a word.

Today's #FebruArty theme is #FishyFeb, and I'm lacking fishy pics, so I made this fish inflammasome disc, which are protein structures involved in sensing inflammatory signals, and triggering the immune response. Made in #Blender and #MolecularNodes

Today's #FebruArty theme is "glasses", so here is a test project, the first I ever made in #Modo, exploring its refraction/caustic abilities. It's a planetary gearbox, not that you can really tell - but it has lots of interesting internal geometry!

Today's #FebruArty is #SensoryArt's theme of "rough". These are some rough versions of an illustration: 3D scene in #Modo, (2) render, (3) compositing.

Our work massively improved once we learned to worry less about rendering, and more about compositing

Today's #FebruArty theme is #FishyFeb, so I made an image of fish aquaporin, which are protein channels that help maintain water balance in the fish's body. Alpha helices are shown in blue, loops in yellow. Made in #Blender and #MolecularNodes

Nope! It's a digital scene rather than a photo. We made the 3D model of the molecule, and then arranged it in space, with interesting lighting, textures, etc. I'm glad it looks realistic enough to pass for a photo!

Today's #FebruArty theme is "orange", so these are some glowing orange testosterone molecules, which we made for Sekisui Diagnostics, with #Modo and #VMD

NINE YEARS ago we made a visualisation of the Biomass satellite for Airbus Defence & Space - today it's ready to be packed up for launch! Space is hard but rewarding.... Go Biomass!!!

Another DEEP DIVE, this time into tracking space debris around the Earth, and how we visualised datasets of many thousands of objects to help explore the near-Earth environment

"Rings" is too good a #FebruArty theme to only post once, so here's an illustration we made of space objects around the Earth (working/defunct satellites, rocket bodies, other bits and bobs). You can see a ring of geostationary satellites, and a shell of low earth orbit satellites.

Today's #FebruArty theme is "rings", so it had to be Saturn, which we made after being inspired by the Cassini backlit Saturn photo (www.jpl.nasa.gov/images/pia17...)

Today's #FebruArty theme is "puzzle", so this is an illustration where we had to work out how to fit erythromycin into its binding site on Human Serum Albumin (HSA), which is very much like doing a 3D jigsaw puzzle... Made with #Modo and #VMD

Today's #FebruArty theme is "eyes", so here are the eyes of Sauron - also known as "optical tweezers" in the original Elvish. These can trap qubits, to then perform quantum operations. Like how the One Ring pulls you in until you've done what it wantses.
