I just moved my audible library away from amazon! I whole heartedly recommend libation: getlibation.com It gets the job of downloading and de-drming done easily. I tend to use my phone (android) for audiobooks, and I installed voice to listen to them play.google.com/store/apps/d...

Today's in Japan it's Mountain Day (山の日, Yama no Hi) so I thought I'd put together a small collection of my favourite prints featuring Mount Fuji, Japan's most iconic sacred mountain.

I'm going to go out on a likely unpopular limb and say that genai has no place in my classroom. Or really, any classroom, really. There can be a case for LLM/pattern recognition in research, but it has to be highly intentional and well thought out. Will not join or renew with AHA.
The AHA has published Guiding Principles for Artificial Intelligence in History Education, offering a disciplinary approach to AI that focuses on the specific needs and challenges of history educators. 🗃️

History of Modern Japan - my first degree's major was Elementary Education (it was only as a nontrad student that I went back for my history degrees).
What was your favorite early clas NOT in your eventual major. Mine was Ethnomusicology: an introduction to folk music.
I invariably get, "Ooh anthro that was my favorite class/cool professor" from people I meet. I tend to think soms of it is our outré material, being willing to talk "taboo" subjects in a cross-cultural context.

Ironically MY favorite class was probably Geology 101...

hard same. i love robots of all kinds but hate ai slop with the passion of fifty burning suns.
I simultaneously adore fictional robots and despise real-world hoaxsters trying to convince us that LLM slop engines are even remotely the same thing.

I feel like I should post a grand statement about Itch and trying to help authors figure out other ways to sell their books. Maybe I will soon

But for now: Fuck Itch, fuck MasterCard and Visa, fuck Collective Shout

Yes! I'm a historian who studies my country's history of genocidal violence in the late 19th century (especially how we remember it) and I can promise you that it's far too late if you "leave it to history." Understanding how it happened is good. Stopping it when it's happening is better.
The problem with saying “history will remember” is that we are deciding right now whether there will be people in the future

We are also deciding right now whether to train people to be historians

Also, once it’s history, it’s too late

Wanting to go into the middle school section of the library - I was in elementary and had read all the mythology and biographies several times and wanted new ones. I also wanted to check out Calvin and Hobbes, but noooooo librarian didn't want to allow fourth grade me into the middle school section.
What is, in your opinion, the dumbest thing you were scolded by an adult for doing when you were a kid?
