Elias had the trinket in his grasp. He had it hidden within the top of his robes. He ran his fingers over the woven branches. “I must say, hunter, having a paganistic token on your person would get you in quite a bit of trouble.” He then twirled it between his fingers. “A true inquisitor of your calibre would be excised and executed for having this.” “Give that back,” Sterling snapped, reaching for it just as the witch moved it out of his reach. That only made Elias’ smirk grow more devious. “Oh, whyever would I do that? I would be doing you a favour, you know. Also, I quite like it,” he said. “Perhaps, I should wear it around my neck.” “I mean it, witch.” He reached again, this time barely touching the branches. “And it is not a paganist token. It was a gift.” “A gift from whom, hunter?” Sterling opened his mouth to answer, but it quickly died in his throat. He thought about the person, thought about the look on her face when she gave it to him.
