You know, I haven’t thought about this much in concrete terms, but this year we want to go to France, Uruguay, and we have a wedding to go to in Baltimore. So I think it will do me good to start making travel plans, now. #WeeknightWriters #ItsBetterToTravel

Ooh, in spite of everything, there’s been joy. Along with some wonderful stories at shiva about my late father-in-law, I’ve also found joy in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, because hello, I’m a nerd. #WeeknightWriters #StarTrek
Q3: Let's cheer things up a bit! What has brought you joy in the past week? Remember, no joy is too small! #WeeknightWriters

I wrote most of “You Ride the Bus” *on* the bus, specifically the 99 bus to and from campus while in grad school. Like many of mine, it’s about longing and desire. Go read it here: citronreview.com/2016/04/04/y...

Eighteen, in England, I went to a pub in the middle of nowhere to see a folk duo named Jungr and Parker. It was much too out of the way, and nearly no one showed up. The band drove the poor lost Yank to the nearest train station and gave me a tape for coming all the way out to see them.

When it comes to character names, I usually latch on to a first name fairly easily, but then the character will be “Rebecca [Lastname]” four the entire draft. #AwesomeCharacters
For me, names often come late, especially for secondary characters.

I’ve written entire novels before naming the main character, though. I do square brackets: [Brother], say, so I can find/replace.

I’ve never tossed in a placeholder name, just the square-brackets trick. #AwesomeCharacters
Tell me more about your #AwesomeCharacters

Writing technical question!

Do you name your characters right away or do you use placeholder names?

Are the placeholders descriptive or just filler names you'll change?

Has a placeholder ever grown on you?

This is eminently satisfying reading.
I said last week I wrote a thing - it's an idea that I've been kicking around for a while and finally got written. I never know what to do with short pieces so ... here you go?

Obviously noodling with lots of ideas from current events. Hope you enjoy.

Here’s a thought. How about defunding ICE and prosecuting every single one of them for their fucking crimes?
I am introducing the Quick Recognition (QR) Act, which requires ICE and CBP officers to wear uniforms featuring QR codes. When scanned, the code would generate a digital ID displaying the officer’s name, badge number, and law enforcement agency.

ICE should be unmasked both physically and digitally.
