It was a superstitious belief that using an animal's true name would allow it to hear what you said, detect your presence & cast spells on you... so euphemisms were used ritually, like Russian 'medved' (медведь) meaning "honey-eater".

@questauthority.bsky.social this is kind of completely random, but I recently learned of in re Neagle (1890), and I'm wondering about the precipitating events of that case. Do you think a judge or justice would or should recuse from a dispute where a former election opponent is a party's spouse?
That's right up there with the idea that judges should recuse in cases involving the president who appointed them.
