Call it anecdotal, but my Canadian friends who are cancelling their US travel are not doing it because of tariff worries at all; they’re doing it because the US government is currently actively threatening Canada’s sovereignty and economy and they’re all justifiably furious
This is exactly why Canadians are fed up with US media.

A segment on Canadians cancelling Vermont vacations. Mentions tariffs but not (1) who started the trade war or (2) that the US is constantly threatening to ANNEX our country!

This isn’t MAGA. It’s not FOX. It’s a random NBC affiliate.

Psychological safety is NOT about lack of disagreement.

Psychological safety REQUIRES:

* disagreement and debate
* setting standards for behavior and performance, and enforcing them
* telling people things they don't want to hear
* courage, from the bottom up
* humility, from the top down

Among the material devastation to everyday people, Senate Dems have now blown a hole in their ability to work with the House.

We had an agreed upon plan, House took immense risk, then Senate turned around midway and destroyed it w/ a fear-based, inexplicable abdication.

They own what happens next.

Think about how no one under 30 knows what pensions are, it's a totally alien concept. The GOP goal is to make all government services as alien and unfamiliar.

A typical human story. Acceptance of abuse invites more abuse, even if retaliation can be costly. People are warier of people who hit back.
Two Republican senators told me tonight this vote shows they can execute the same strategy again — cut Democrats out of the negotiations on a gov’t funding bill, pass it thru the House, and expect Senate Dems to back down and not filibuster it.

“We liked it over here,” one said.

By the time it was his turn to speak, he'd changed his mind

Never doubt that speaking out can change hearts and minds

The fight going on in the Democratic Party right now is not between hard left, left and moderate. It’s between those who want to fight and those who want to cave. And Team Fight stretches across all ideological aspects of the Party. Misread this at your own peril.

It feels like the argument inside of the Democratic establishment is heating up. I hope that's a good thing. I hope there's a faction that understands the fight in front of them and wants to be more proactive. And I hope they're winning against Schumer's milquetoast business as usual.
Extraordinary moment — Nancy Pelosi issues a statement calling on Democratic senators to reject the House funding bill, i.e. to defy Chuck Schumer.

"Democratic senators should listen to the women," she says, referring to Murray/DeLauro who want a 1-month stopgap bill instead.

hey friends.

there’s a whole lot going on, but I am still on the job hunt and watching savings vanish monthly

any leads welcome, especially if you or your company are hiring

devops/SRE and support related roles

travel is not really safe for me now

VT and/or remote, relocation negotiable
Hi, hello, it's me

I got laid off in November and a gig at all would be great

If you know me, it's probably because I've been doing DevRel for 7+yr, but it isn't really safe anymore. So SRE/Ops roles, but if it can also help me move my loves someplace safe i'm pretty flexible, tbh
Just a reminder that our trans industry colleagues are literally running out the clock. Life and death. If you are wondering if you should offer them a gig even at a low rate outside America, for the love of Pete, do it now.

THIS IS WHY YOU DON'T DO THE THING WHEN BULLIES SAY, "DO THE THING OR ELSE." BECAUSE BULLIES ARE ALWAYS GOING TO DO THE THING OR ANOTHER, EQUALLY BAD THING. AND THEN A WORSE THING.
So am I understanding correctly that the GOP threatened to defund DC of its own money if they didn't tear up the BLM thing

And then DC tore up the BLM thing

And now the GOP is defunding them anyway

Yes. They're treating it as if a shutdown would be some sort of opportunity to make recess appointments (but in this case, recess firings).

It is not. It opens up no such new legal authority to fire.
Here's something important. It's just one part of the equation. But it's a key one. This debate is being carried on on the basis of the claim that a long shutdown opens up new legal authority for Musk to fire people. For a while now I've been in contact with a lawyer with deep knowledge of ...

American exceptionalism is why many Americans genuinely don't understand why Canadians wouldn't want to join the US because they don't understand that people in other countries see the US for what it is- without freedom colored glasses (formerly known as rose colored glasses but sold in the USA).
I’m convinced American exceptionalism is a big part of what made us vulnerable to Trump. We’re so used to thinking of ourselves as the Special Freedom Country that a lot of people find it inconceivable we could rapidly collapse into shabby despotism even as they watch it happen.
Real talk. I’ve lost all belief in American exceptionalism. There is no secret Liberty Sauce that makes us inherently better. We’re just human beings (derogatory). But it also means we’re human beings (laudatory), so I refuse to believe Republicans won politics forever and can rule as god kings.
