I think the thing here is apparently no one in civil society, particularly the business side, wants to be the first to say the music is slowing. Everyone is gambling on being able to ride out the storm without the bottom falling out, but by doing so they increase the chances that it actually does
we live in "butlerian fascism" where it's all a rinky dink performance of totalitarianism but somehow everyone goes along with it for insane, also performative reasons
the question of this historical moment is "when will the simulacra actually become real?" depending on your answer, you might find it easy to shrug this off or alternatively want to run around grabbing every random stranger by the shoulders, shake them, and yell they should be as panicked as you are

I think a lot about the phrase "a well armed society is a polite society" because it's implicitly premised on this kind of "freedom as domination" that everyone will be polite to you otherwise you shoot them
all of this makes total sense when you recognize that “freedom” here means the freedom to dominate those you view as your subordinates and “tyranny” is when someone threatens that “freedom” or worse, when those subordinates try to claim power as political equals
IMO many Americans don't even buy guns for personal protection or to defend themselves against a tyrannical government. They simply have a shopping addiction
